padlock, will my bike be safe working in Chelmsford?

As that mentions it is intended to deter bicycle theft. If a thief wanted it, a set of scissors (obviously not) would be able to get through it, I wouldn't trust that to secure my motorbike.

You may aswell tie a granny knot in piece of string.

Depends what bike you're securing. A £7.60 combination lock is lol, that won't do for locking up anything!!

I wouldn't use that to secure a bicycle, let alone a motorbike.

Why do people pay hundreds/thousands for a bike, but refuse ~£150 on a good lock.

What bike are you going to be using it to lock up?

Yes that chain and padlock is better than the £7.60 combination lock but there are lots more better chains and padlocks. Almax are considered to be very good but the price reflects that.

I got one for about £30-35 in the ghost bikes sale. Christ it's the thickest piece of chain I've ever seen that's not attatched to a crane. Think 20 ton lifting tackle. Thing weighs an absolute ton though and the luggage compartment on an ER6 barely has room for a spare packet of fags.

As someone has already said if someone really wants a bike they can get it. Even if it means throwing it in a back of a van. (Which can be done in about 30 seconds)

When I went to Chelmsford there was quite a lot of bikes in the town centre but hardly any of them had locks. The idea is with the lock it will make your bike less of a target compared to the bike next to it or the one a little further up the street without a lock.
That being said, after a few months of owning a motorbike I stopped putting a lock on my bike because I got lazy.

Use any old crap for that then and just park it with other bikes. Perhaps make yours the muddiest so it'll be less of a target.

My dad cycled to work for over 10 years and used to lock the bike up in a very busy area with a decent chain.

He said a common thing that started occuring there was the thieves would nick one of the wheels [quick-release sorts], then the rider would inevitably end up getting a bus home until he could buy a replacement wheel.

By which time the thieves returned at night when it was deserted and had the chains off clever cunts these people, always find someway to get it in the end if you aren't vigilant
