Is it true that one a motorbike the gears go like this:

1,N,2,3,4,5,6?

If so, why? Why not just 1,2,3,4,5,6,N or N,1,2,3,4,5,6.

If it is, an your in 1st gear, you'd have to push the lever down, let it go back to normal position, then down again to get it in to second?

If your in first gear you have to go up to go into neutral.

The gears normally go one down the rest up unless your on a race bike then its the other way round.

You push your foot down to go into first then you put your foot under the gear leaver then click it up for the rest of the gears.

I'm not going to say all bikes but the chances of you riding anything thing different are very very slim.

most classic bikes (BSA/triumph) gears go, first up and the rest down, backwards to japanese bike same with the gear lever and brake lever which are on the oppersite side compared to a jap bike.

When I started riding I thought the layout was a bit silly, but when you actually use it it makes sense.

Quote:
Why not just 1,2,3,4,5,6,N

That layout would be a bit silly, as you'd be climbing down the gears for some lights or whatever, then want to put it in neutral when you've stopped, and you'd have to click it right up from 1st to neutral.

Also going from neutral to first you'd have to click it down 6 times.

Ah yes, seems logical when you think about it when it's laid out like that, what about N,1,2,3,4,5,6 though? You'd have to get down anyway to slow down for traffic lights etc.

If N was at the bottom, you'd select it by mistake quite a lot.

The point of it is, that you can go down til you hit the bottom, you know for sure that's first so you're in the right gear for pulling away. You also know that it's just a nudge up (not a full click) to get into neutral.

i find the gears quite good as they are eg. the 1-n-2-3-4-5-6-7 (i own a mito, hence the 7) but racers use a reverse change so they can knock it down quicker in corners dont they?
because some rearsets do this dont they?

Right, so just to confirm this so I understand (I find that when I understand how something works, I can general use it better). I’m in neutral and I want to go work or whatever. I click down, now I’m in 1st, then I click up, 2nd, up again, 3rd, then 4th, followed by 5th, and lastly 6th. So now I want to come down, so I’d click it down, 5th, then 4th, 3rd, followed by 2nd and down once more into 1st. Finished my journey so I just give it a little click and it pops in to neutral?

Oh I love it when i'm right! One last thing on this topic, when your coming down the gears, and you go into 1st then you click down once more, nothing will happen will it?

No, it'll either do what my old bike did and the lever will just not move anymore, or do what my BROS does, the lever moves but doesn't engage into anything.

My dads gear box has a ledge setup, for starters its upside down and on the other side, goes 1 up 3 down, 1, n, 2 ,3 ,4 and then it has a little neutral lever you just kick with you heel and then what ever gear your in it goes straight to neutral, its great! (Royal Enfield 500 Bullet).

The only bad thing about having N betwean 1 and 2 is that sometimes when downchanging/upchanging you find N by mistake. you open up the throttle to go and all you get is a shitload of revs.

no, racers use a reverse shift so that you can change up in corners or be ready to shift up as soon as you can without having your foot UNDER the shifter

if your foot is under the shifter then you have reduced the ground clearance on left handers

yes, I guess the linkage on any footrest hangers could be designed to be easily reversed
