i have my CBT done. looking to get my DAS sorted for next year.
cant afford to do it all this side of crimbo.

once i have my full licence, i doubt i'll want to keep my CG125, so have started to look at what kind of bike i'd like to get hold of.

not looking for a racing monster and i like the high riding positions.

something around the 500-650cc mark.

i'll be using it to commute mostly, so a bike thats got a good reputation for reliability and something i can get involved with for the basic maintenace (fork seals/chains/sprockets/oil changes etc).

i seem to gravitate toward the enduro style bikes (e.g. Honda Transalp). although not knowing how these handle, i'm unsure how suitable that'd be for commuting.

even though i'd be using it for commutes, i would like something that i can open up on a quiet road sometimes and squash a few kittens.....

any one got any ideas?

Vstrom 650?
Versys?
KLR650?

I'm looking at the Versys pretty hard as my next bike. Tired of sports bikes, just want to sit up and ride.

Thundercat is quite similar to the CBR600F, with about half the price tag.

budgie wise: i'd guess around the £1500/£2000 mark if i'm going to consider having the bike for the long term.

need to start saving my pennies now though.

but i'm up for anything cheaper that may need some servicing done if it helps bring the price down cosiderably.....

SV's can be made to be quite the saucemonsters my old fruit. Just because it's not your cup of chai, don't encourage someone to completely disregard a cheap, well known and infinitely better than a chinese-o-copysaki bike...

Versys is a stonking road bike, I'd have a mk2 but don't like the ugly mushroom headlight of the 1st generation model. Did buy one though, work really well on the road.

i actually like the look of the SV650 Wink

keep the ideas coming.

i would want a decent MPG too - i'm not in it for the thrills here, as said, its a commuter and i have NO garage, so will be tucked under a sheet most of the time. so nothing covered in chrome Smile

CB500/CBF500 Question

Do silly miles with a bit of basic maintenance, not all that pretty or thrill-inducing but does the job and does it at adequate speed Thumbs Down

This. Aesthetics aside, it's a really solid bike. Bit underrated even.

There a lot of advise on here that's prompted me to do further research Thumbs Up

I'd be interested to know what's best for mpg on the 400-600 range though, it's surprisingly difficult to find reliable figures!

Definitely agree with the Thundercat, you can pick up one in good nick for peanuts and not only that as insurers see them as sports tourers, your premiums wont be at all bad.

Plus it's such an awesome bike.

I own a 2001 650cc Transalp and commute everyday on it.

Does me fine. Its a ruddy heavy bike and fairly tall, so keep that in mind.

But to ride it, it is a pussy cat, really easy to ride and the v-twin engine is smooth.

Fuel wise, you get around 150-160 miles to the tank, but ive pushed it to 180 on a motorway run.

maintenance wise its easy really, however they dont come with a centre stand as standard, so you will need to fit one or get a paddock stand.

Smile

ive seen one of these on my commute to work actually, i saw it and wanted to find out what it was Smile

the Triumph Street Triple appeals to me, but probs a bit too much bike for me straight after my test.

the Versys appeals to my sensible practical side Smile and it dont look too bad either (IMO)

I agree with both of you. It's a seriously under-rated bike by those that have just looked at one and not ridden one. The Mk2 headlight looks like a cats arse, and the Mk1 headlight looks like a mushroom or the Rolling Stones tongue logo. Cracking bike though - is pretty good at everything and ridden well will give a similar size sports bike a run for its money.
