I'm sure I can't be alone on this one, I know paddy is a serial bike trader, but dies anyone else change the bikes frequently?

I don't know why I do it but I rarely keep a bike much longer than a year. Every time I tell myself this will be the last one I change for a while but then 6 months later I'm always browsing eBay for the next fascination!!

What's the key to keeping a bike long term?

This.

In my first 3 years of riding after passing my test I had 7 bikes.

Then I bought the VS, which I've now had for 6 years. Only a few months later I got the 550 zeph and I've had that for 6 years now as well. Confused

I still like to browse ebay and autotrader, and go to local bike shops for a look at and sometimes a sit on heir stock but so far I haven't found anything that I would trade either of them in for. Cool

I do it with cars. Only last about 18 months normally although I've had the Honda just over 2 years now - I had one previously as well about 5 years ago so maybe it is just a case of finding something you like.

I'd swap it for an RS6 if I could afford it though.

I have the worst type of that poxy bike buyers disease : I cant afford feck all , I don't need another bike and the ones I like are shite! Shocked

It has to be said that my affliction has all been all but cured by my other-half.
Something she said about battering me to death in my sleep if I bought another bike home Shocked

I've got better recently, but had about 35 in the last seven years, roughly.

I say getting better, I've bought five in the last year come to think of it.

I changed once every 6 months or so when I first started. Had the 954 nearly two years now. Shocked

Total opposite for me [to my disappointment], get too attached and lazy to deal with the hassles of selling and rebuying, as much as i waste endless hours browsing and daydreaming about the illusive next bike Laughing

I've been riding bikes and only had 6 bikes, two in the first two years, then the next for about 3 years then the other three for the rest of the time. The Varadero I have now is 8-9 years. I get what I like and don't waste money.

Complete opposite here!

Started on CBR125 kept that for 7 years then passed test. Bought a brand new 600F financed for 3 years, probably keep it for 5 years then all I want is a 2008+ Blade.... I'll probably keep that until I wreck it or get too old for it and need something else!

Since April I have bought 4 bikes, a zx6r, a Thunderace, a cx500 and a zr7, and I am keeping them all, they are all on the road and I use a different one every day.

I get bored very easily. When I lived in the UK, I'd usually change bike every 3 months. Had about 50 so far and been riding 'continously' for the last 8 years

But am holding off for now lol.

Would love to change bikes every year tho

I couldn't really be bothered with the financial aspect.

Every bike you buy is essentially a risk that it's a complete basket case IMO. Might be fine 9 times out of 10, but then you get the knackered machine that needs essentially everything fixing.

I like the idea of paying a few hundred quid for tax/insurance/consumables and that being that. Couldn't be bothered with the constant fiddling really.

Agree with that!

I couldn't be arsed with the "sell mine, be without a bike, find a bike in good condition that isn't going to jump a major fault on me" hassle to be honest.

My T'Cat has been perfectly reliable so far so I'm reluctant to get rid of it !

I suppose as well it depends on how much free time you have / garage space / etc.

Some are lucky enough (okay, have organized their lives well enough) that they have time to tinker a lot. I don't really, not without dragging a bag of tools around the country and completing a job during a sunny day.

What a crock....

If anything, I buy my bikes with recent servicing and good tyres & chain/sprockets. As soon as I get the feeling they need attention, I will sell them on and replace with something of again, better condition. Thus the only thing I invest in is train journeys and fuel to pick one up. And I get them cheap enough to be able to make profit for when I do eventually sell them, even if I say 'is in need of service' in the advert.

I also don't buy bikes with known problems. Like you, Mr Thundercat. Enjoy your 2nd gear whilst it lasts. Early R6 & R1's I won't touch, same with Suzuki GS500, early fazers and generally any bike really that is very badly advertised. It's generally quite easy to spot the difference between a genuine seller and a chancer. It's only lowering your guard due to the desire of a new, cheap bike that might screw you over (it has for me but only once in the 50 or so bikes I have purchased)

I change my cars all the time, but oddly I tend to keep my bikes a fair while.

For me it's the fact that I spend less time on the bike than in the car, so it takes me longer to get bored. Cars have always been my life, so I change my car at least once a year usually. My mates think it's hilarious.

not very often, works out at about one bike a year as a mean average

I have one friend who's owned 4 bikes his whole life, he's late 50s and still has them all, and another mate who I've never seen on the same bike twice, and the rest are in the middle of this somewhere

I do it with cars but haven't with bikes so much. In 25 years of driving I've had over 40 cars (and one I had for 5 years!) but in an accumulated total of 7 years biking I've had 3 bikes (and one that never made it onto the road).

I window shop, a lot, and have come very close to chopping in the SFV a few times but the truth is it still does everything I ask of it, I know it very well and it has been 100% faultless.
