This is for a friend of mine who owns a Triumph Daytona 599i 1998 model. Since he bought it it has had a starting problem. Sometimes when he goes to start it it turns over slowly and won't start. He was told to flick the kill switch off and on and this seemed to work sometimes and the bike turned over quickly and started. last weekend we had planned to go out for a ride and it wouldn't start again and rant he battery down trying. Tried jump starting it but it was just too heavy to get any speed up. We stripped down the bike to check the plugs which were replaced and also took out the starter to check the 'sprag' clutch and starter. The tarter spins over fine off the bike on a good battery and the sprag clutch seems to be working according to the manual. We replaced the starter and tried a battery direct to it and the engine still spun over slowly? There is a healthy spark at the plugs so we can rule out ignition....I think. It is also fitted with a Datatool alarm system but are not sure if this could be anything to do with it after reading horror stories about them. Has anyone any ideas what could be the problem.? he is almost at the hammer stage now! Crying or Very sad

Wow, out of all the blame the alarm threads this is the best Wink

Starter motor works, you have a spark, so must be a faulty alarm.

Have you tried jumping it from another good known battery?

Just because it spins the starter off the bike, doesn't mean it has enough power to spin it with the engine on it

Reasons for slow starter motor spinning are three, stiff engine that's hard to turn, a knackered starter motor not rotating quick enough, or lack of voltage to the starter motor either on the live wire or the earth return to the battery via the metal work.

Now if you tried jump starting off a good charged battery with good quality jump leads direct to the starter motor and cranking is still slow then you can assume your issue is either a stiff to turn engine or a faulty starter motor.

As mentioned already a starter that spins ok off the bike does not mean it is a good starter, it needs to be tested under load for a test to be valid.
