Not sure you can get them in the correct size but would a sports bike with knobblies be a good option come slush and snow?

Knobbly tyres offer a bit of an advantage in SOME snow.
In hard packed snow, they'll quite possibly make it worse.
Similarly in slush.

Trials tyres might make more sense.
Studded tyres for hard packed etc.

I'd love to see someone going the whole hog and adapting a ski and track setup for a 1L sports. A vid of that might be worth a watch.

But in England: Personally I think people who put winter rubber on cars are just urinating there spondolics away, same goes for sports bikes.

It only works in the movies...

Although it'd probably work fine on dirt, tbh.

i think dual sport tyres are pretty good,
they seem to be ok in the dry, and in a bit of slush they can definitly move more snow than a set of regular road tyres,
if they had some snow grooves they would be even better, but to be fair you dont really get snow on the roads here just some slush,

as for the ice, well nothing but spikes is going to work, and spikes are only good on ice,

Have wondered about dual sports on my trackstar. Get me through winter and let me do some mild green lanes. Do they wear down quickly? I do so much commuting I'd be thinking about how much I would be wasting them on tarmac.

Cheers

First time I watch MI2 the whole film was spoiled for me by the sudden swap to knobblies in this very scene Brick Wall .

If they'd just kept them on from the start it might have been better.

nah the Maxxis MAPD Detour or metzler tourace get good mileage

you can go a bit chunkier with the Continental TKC 80 or Mitas E10 tyres, but they wear a bit quicker on pavement

Are you anticipating enough of the stuff for long enough to warrant buying another set of tyres and changing them over (and back again) specifically for that!? If you really intend to go out in the snow I'd say something light and cheap with very little to smash up would be much better than something covered in plastic with loads of power...

Smaller screw in studs work well in all surfaces, I'd say.

Man hole covers not a problem in my experience.
The spike maybe sinks in a bit when in contact with a really hard surface.

I wouldn't leave them on for ages with no adverse weather, but I didn't notice significant wear from maybe a week's use with just tarmac.

I didn't expect them to be nearly as useful in the real world as I found they were.

Yes. Winter tyres. If you have a rear wheel drive vehicle it makes a massive difference.

I use winter tyres on the rear axle of my Vito van and it makes the difference between getting out of my drive or not if there is snow on the ground. Traction controll off, engage second gear, lift foot off clutch.

Oddly I got just as far as I did on Kumho Ecsta KH-31s as I did on Goodyear Ultragrip 8s on my BMW, and if you're interest that is close to 2000 feet above sea level in the snow up and down hills no problems Thumbs Up

Not seen those before.
I wonder how long they would last/how they work generally.

Definitely the same for those that have Supermotos for the road too.
Frankly, if you look at how well that SV did in a supermoto race, you could probably say the same for racing them as well! Wink

I just taken delivery this morning of 5 continental contiwinter T850 winter tyres for the car.
The ADAC recently tested all the various brands of winter car tyres, and the continentals came out tops. Braking is S'posed to be up to 50% better in the wet. The only downsides of winter tyres are that they come into their own when the temperature hits below 7'c, and are a little bit more noisier.
