i'm 100% certain you will all say ebay, but this requires a certain amount of effort involving much brown paper, stamps, sticky tape, and visits to post office to weigh stuff that i could really do without, especially as im not here during the week
was wondering if any of you had experiences with places like cash converters, and if you tend to get ripped off badly in places like this
mainly its computer games i wanna sell, cos ive got a stack, a real stack, that i never play, half of them i have never played and dont even like spending money is bad
i understand some games shop have a trade in feature, do you get a decent rate on this? would i be right in thinking you would get a higher value in store credit?
yeh, so selling stuff, best way? ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

You'll get offered something really shite for PS2/pc/xbox etc etc games from places like that, when it comes down to it they can only really sell them for a tenner or so, most of the time its less. So you'd get offered something ridiculous like a couple of quid.
They are in it to make money, they won't offer decent money for anything, they rely on people desperate for money to flog them stuff cheap just to get cash, a bit like a pawn shop, only you can't buy the stuff back!
Best bet really is ebay, and for games you can easily jiffy bag up and stick in post box with stamps on. ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Wow, Mr C. actually gets the way it is supposed to be. Better than half of our customers that think because they bought a game for £40 18 months ago it must still be worth £30 when they want to trade it in again. ____________________ "Unlike public school you don't need to have your arse up and your head down to go a long way...." |

It's worth putting them into www.adtrader.co.uk possibly as a job lot, or as seperate items, I dunno it's worth a try as it is free anyway.
I'd get all the listings ready with Turbo Lister, then come a free listing day on eBay I'd list them all. |

Mr C, not long ... not long at all...
Blockbusters are knocking out good ish named games second hand for £4.99, I've seen brand new games for £4.99 in the hypermarkets (admittedly not good ones)
Play.com etc are selling brand new games for £29.99 (san andreas will be £29.99 and they are taking pre-orders I think)
Before long second hand games will be worthless! ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

I see the secondhand games piling up in all the retailers, how long before they can't take any more or before the purchase prices fall through the floor ? |
You seem to be paying attention, well done.
It is all too true. Games trading used to be a service where people would go to discard their unwanted games and try something out that they hadn't had before, ie. trade a game for another pre-owned game and pay just a few quid. However nowadays people only seem to want to trade their old games for the newest big releases. This means that everyone is bringing in the same games and taking away the latest big game that every other person has bought that same day. In turn this means that all trade-in type shops end up with a saturation of the same games which in turn means the shops need to reduce the price of the common games in order to turn some stock round.
Currently it seems everyone is wanting Driver 3 and we have taken masses of 2nd games in as trade ins for it. It also means we now have masses of games that came out at christmas (MOH rising sun, True crime, NFS underground) and that most people seem to have already played and are no longer interested in playing. (it also doesn't help that these 3 games mentioned are due for platinum release so prices will drop anyway).
I have worked in the games industry for 8 years now for 3 different games companies so have seen through the megadrive days and the PS1 days. Games seem to be getting cheaper and piracy is still increasing (more so with xbox than with PS2) which only makes selling older games more a more difficult. Companies such as Gamestation seem to be gathering more a more 2nd hand games at the moment and their strategy seems to be to open more a more shops in order to sell them, which is probably okay for a company of that size, but with a company the size of ours (currently at 3 shops, 4th due soon) it is more difficult and we actually have to turn games away that are too common.
Selling new games has never been that profitable and now that supermarkets sell games it is becoming even harder to sell them at any profit. However the good stuff at the moment seems to be retro gaming. Megadrive/Snes/Neo Geo and even some PS1 games are now becoming collectable and good money can be had for the good/rare titles. This is something that a lot of smaller independent games companies seem to have caught onto and we actually use ebay to list a lot of our better/older/rarer games.
Anyway as you say, prices are probably all due to drop in the near future especially when more news of the next generation of consoles starts filtering through. Then hopefully (for us) selling games can become profitable again. In the meantime snap up all the cheap used PS2/xbox/gamecube games you can, they could be worth something in the near future (just don't buy the common mass released games, RPGs that aren't Final fantasy are usually a safe bet ). ____________________ "Unlike public school you don't need to have your arse up and your head down to go a long way...." |

I guess I am one of the few people who likes to keep their old games.
I think it is great when after a few months(sometimes years) of not playing a game, you find it and have a few hours fun, and most of mine are multiplayer, and that never gets old.
I like my game collections, be it PC/N64/PS1/PS2
I couldn't part with any of them, not even Pokémon Stadium

i find that with some games, i always keep the games that have great memories of playing even if i know i'll never touch them again
/me looks at mickey mouse castle of illusion on the shelf, his first ever mega drive game
the games im getting rid of are all games, i dont wish to play, or are crap, i went through a stage of buying games that i knew wouldnt run, when my pc was gettin older and older, it was stupid really, buying something you would get no use out of, i intented to play them all when i got a new pc, but now i have a new pc, i find my tolerance for games has gone down and a game needs to be really special to keep my attention, so i have lots of these unwanted never used games
terrible really, such a waste of money, but no one says i was very clever ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

In some ways Ebay is great, but in some ways it isn't, I mean I am selling a skateboard on there and so far the bidding is only up to £15, granted I only paid £50 for it, but it's obviously going to cost me more to send it through Postage and packaging really. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it.
