PostPosted: 20:14 - 22 Oct 2013    Post subject: JUST PAST MOD2 :), I WANT A R1200GS ADVENTURE, IS THIS OK? Reply with quote

Hi

I passed my mod2 yesterday i've been looking online at bmw r1200gs adventures for the past few weeks and all i really want is one of these. Now i've passed i'm torn between the advice i've had from close friends, family and my motorbike instructor (all of which are experienced bikers). They advise to spend around £3000 on a bike and learn on that first through winter and decide in spring what i want. but at the moment i can't find a bike even remotely similar to gs. i'm 6ft and learned on a 125 honda varadero, passed mod1 & mod2 on a bandit 600 (which i loved). truth is i haven't a clue but i'm still leaning towards gs adventure. can anyone suggest a bike or any advice would be much appreciated. cheers

It all really depends if you want to go with your head or your heart, the sensible option would be to get a cheap bike like an old bandit that you liked, just to keep you going for a while, then when you have gotten over the wobbles and random drops (that will happen) then splurge your money on what you want. At the end of the day though its your money.
Congrats on the mod 2 pass btw, passed mine yesterday too Very Happy

£3000 on a bike to 'learn' on over winter??? Get the GS, it's what you want. It won't terribly mind being dropped either.

Think long and hard.

Are you a cunt?

If the answer is yes, buy the BMW.

If it is not, Fireblade.

Speaking from spacker experience, you will probably end up killing yourself. People laughed at Alpha9 when he got his license revoked, but the truth is when you've just passed your test you don't really know how quickly these bigger (>125) bikes get up to speed until you're sat on it and find you're doing 90 in a 30 without trying.

Something like a 1200GS this early on will probably see you embedded in a wall or the back of an artic when you suddenly realise that you're shit at braking from 124mph to 40mph in 3 yards because of poor obs.

Versys.

V Storm.

New Honda cross tourer.

If you really want a BM. Then 650GS might be better.

Of if you are planning on riding over winter. Stick with the Val and gain experience. Or pick up a old 500/600 to see you through the next few months.

I apologise for my earlier comment, what I should've said was:

OOOohhhhhhh don't get something so big, you'll die horribly in flames screaming. Get a nice 500 twin.

Damn, people...

You want a 1200, get a 1200.

Don't listen to the people who think a stepped licence is 'a good idea for your own safety'.

Or, be a pansy and get less than half the bike you actually want. Your choice.

A modern 600 will have what IMO is amazing performance, obviously though if a BMW 1200 floats your boat then go for it.. not worried about the weight as a first bike?

Feel capable?

What's the rush?

Thumbs Up

Thanks for the replies i can see there is plenty of people out there who don't like people on bmw's, i'm 34 with a family and have no intention on seeing how fast i can go, just want to enjoy motorbikes and c a bit of the uk and hopefully europe in the not too distant future. probably gonna spend the next 2-4 weeks looking at v strom, versus, 650gs and maybe transalp 700 (has anyone got a transalp r they any good?). all in all good banter i can see myself spending a bit more time on BCF. cheers Thumbs Up Laughing Laughing

You've probably no intention of going ditchsurfing or being in a SMIDSY either, but wobbling around pretending to be Charlie McEwan is a damn fine way to make it happen.

Get whatever you want.

I thought I was insane for wanting a 500cc so soon.

Might be worth taking out extra life insurance.

G650GS seems good idea. If you like it, but wish it had more grunt then bingo, you'd probably be happy getting a 1200 which can be done when the weather is better and gives you time to get used to it before winter 2014.

If you don't like the G650GS then it's unlikely you'd like the 1200.

The 650 can be had for around £3k for a 2 year old and a decent amount of the depreciation has occurred.

Went 125 > 600 > 1000 in 3 weeks, getting a 500 will be fine. You just have to learn to ride a bike, its not hard, you control the damn thing Laughing

You are gonna love it when that 1200 goes over after you get off to take pictures up you local excuse for a mountain. Phoning the AA to ask them come out help you pick it up. You have to promise to record it all and UL to youtube.

The G650GS single is very vibey, I wouldn't (and didn't) choose to go any distance on it.

I wouldn't (and didn't) choose the 1200 either. Review after review after review of "It's on its second cat and third loom and fourth final drive and fifth recall but when it's on the road it's an awesome bike as long as you're doing between 60 and 100 mph and don't get head shake when you roll off the throttle."

So I went for the 800 GS (well, the "650" badged budget tarmac version of it). It ticked all the right boxes for me, it's not like I'd ever actually take a "GS" bike offroad without a camera crew and support truck.

Of course, if I'd had an ounce of sense I'd have gone for a Japanese equivalent or a Tiger. Whistle

How often is this GS going to be used? Daily or just on your hols? If the latter then what are you going to ride between holiday trips to keep up your riding skills?

If you are a big a strong go for it, It'd probably but a better first bike than a 600cc supersports.

Big bikes can be more difficult to handle when manoeuvring on foot and wouldn't be advisable for the average rider however rider bulk can easily make up for that. I think with my size 6'5 the TDM I have now would have been a more sensible choice for a first bike than the IL4 600 I got.

With BMW you tend to buy with the heart and then get suckered into keeping buying BMW with 'good' offers from the dealer(s).

That's not me saying that it's from a friend who has owned several GS models. He said if he was buying with his head he wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. I find it's also a little clique or club with the GS owners.

If you want to have a look at a similar style but more in tune with road riding I'd check out the V-Strom (Suzuki DL650) or if you want/afford/can insure the older DL1000 (as in not available new since 2008ish - due to be reintroduced iirc).

You're being stupid. There's no nice way to say it. people who know more than you are telling you that but you've turned to the internet in the hope someone says "yeah, you know better than them! Just do it!"

The weight will be as much, if not more, of a problem than the power. You probably won't die. You may not even crash. You definitely won't learn very fast though.

Get a Versys 650 if that sort of style floats your boat. It's light and has more power than you'll be able to use for months if not years. They were throwing them away with great prices not so long ago so there should be decent deals about.

Or ignore everyone, get your Ewanmobile and give everyone a laugh as you try to manouvre it in traffic and drop it at junctions.

Honda Crosstourer? Getting good reviews and designed for the job of touring. Cheaper but Honda quality. Let's face it your probably not going to taking a bike across deserts so why pay for that kind of machine.
