Hi new to this. I have just acquired a gp100 1982. I've serviced the bike changed the spark plug and stripped down and cleaned the car. For the first time it has started today. After starting it slowly drops the revs and cuts out. Any ideas why it does this? Is there a chance the carb needs setting correctly and does anyone know how to do this? Thanks. Stu.

Is the battery fully charged? Is it holding a charge? There may not be sufficient power from the alternator to maintain a spark if the battery is flat/not charging.

Then is there gunk in the carbs? Gunkage could be moving from non-obstruction to obstruction when the engine runs.

Clean the carb properly. Your idle/mixture circuit is clogged.

Wind the mixture screw in, counting how many turns until it stops. Write down how many turns (probably 2.5). Undo it, blast in some carb cleaner using the nozzle, refit the mixture screw in its original position.

An 82 GP will not even need a battery to spark, I would think you need to adjust the carb a little assuming it is properly all cleaned out, warm it up thoroughly then locate the mixture screw and tweak it in or out until you get the smoothest fastest idle you can, you may need to use the idle speed screw to get the speed correct after adjusting the mixture.

Like the others have said, it probably just needs the carb cleaning out. I would also replace the air filter and then take it for an "Italian tune-up" which is basically a thrash up the road to clear all the cobwebs out.

Indeed no battery needed on the gp 100. Maybe run a litre of fresh pre mix thru it to wet the seals etc and get some fresh oil around the bearings .....pull the fuel pipe off the tank and make sure you have you have a good flow of fresh fuel....failing that...did you take all the jets and emulsion tube out of the carb and give them a proper clean?
