I'm considering picking up a bike off ebay as a donor bike for mine. It's spares or repairs but has no V5. I have no intention of ever using it on the road, I just want to rag it for parts.

My thinking is that the lack of V5 in this case is a good thing. It means I don't have to arse about making a SORN declaration each year for a bag of bits in the shed, or have any other worries about any other legislation that doesn't exist yet.

Am I likely to come across any issues? I realise there's a risk of it being nicked, but given the list of faults, that seems unlikely - it seems like it's just been standing for a few years (it's a 30 year old bike so that's kind of a given at some point in its life)

Well I just looked at the ad and I would buy it without hesitation.

Just give vehicle licencing a call and ask. Mind you if there's no docs how would tax even know you have it?

That's the last thing I would do. IF the current owner has no documents, then either:

It's been off the grid since before they went all digital so no sorn was ever issued or required.
Or
Whomever it's registered to has it sorn.

All you'll do by making an enquiry is bring it to the attention of DVLA. Since it's due to be broken up/scrapped anyway it's best to have your parts off it and let it die a peaceful death. The only fly in the ointment is if you try to register a change of engine number. They might require evidence of where it came from, in which case you'll have to forge a receipt or something.

Thanks for that. However, in the absence of a V5, it remains the sellers duty to obtain a V5 and inform DVLA of the change of ownership, yes?

If it's bought through ebay, there will be a 'trail' through that.
Make sure you get a receipt - ideally on their headed paper if it's a breakers.
Remember a V5 is not proof of ownership and if someone with a stolen bike requests the V5, if the owner says it is stolen then the DVLA give the V5 to the person with the stolen bike.

So seller (or someone) is still declaring it SORN. So someone will have to continue to do so.

The bike in the advert is red Confused

That's very much not the original paintwork Smile I imagine it used to have the same paint job as mine (which is listed as green) currently has.
