Are these functional or just a gimmick for the road?

Demon Tweeks call them a 'worthwhile addition' to any road bike, but I look on that as being marketing hype

I couldn't say, I have no idea?

As I have never been on the starting grid of a Moto-GP, I doubt that I would have much use for them.
Look like a bit of a gimmick for a road based bike imho.

I can't personally see them as a worthwhile addition on anything but a race rep.

They are mandatory in GP racing, I remember a big crash with Barbera/Simoncelli where the latter pushed Barberas front brake lever with his handlebar.

So no, they have zero use on the road apart from being a tarty accesory and making your bike heavier Razz

Weren't they introduced because there was a coming together on a racetrack, where someone's brake was applied by the collision, and spat them off?

Yes, Catalunya 2006.

Compulsory in some classes now. Pretty pointless for the road IMO, the same as shark fin guards.

Would they not protect your levers in a spill though?

Potentially, it's not especially strong metal. It's designed to stop the lever getting pulled on by accident rather than as crash protection. I suspect one whack in the wrong direction in a crash style situation and it'd snap or bend out of the way anyway.

I would hope that I stay far enough away from other riders on the road that there would be no accidental catching of levers. I won't be rushing to fit a set to my bike!

I know you can get some silly-expensive levers, but screw putting a £40 per side item on to protect something which only costs around £10. Even if the lever does break it will likely still be semi operational to get home.

It'd surely make better sense to put the £80 saved from not buying them towards fixing the damaged bike.

You can get some on eBay on about £18. Probably shit quality but chances are you're having them just for the look anyway.

Bit expensive Shocked I did hit a cars mirror with mine once when filtering & thought what if that had been my brake lever.

Well the bike's mirrors stick out more than the levers, so it's generally those you'll hit first.

You also (hopefully) know when a filtering gap is tight, and when it isn't so don't take the tight ones at break neck speed. Laughing
