https://news.sky.com/story/1163152/miliband-pay-living-wage-for-1000-tax-break

Looks like that is going to be the key on buying voters for labour.

seems like a good idea to me
paying people a "Living wage" not a basic minimum wage
I pay my employee's more than BMW, where most employers pay as little as they can
so they have no hope of progressing or saving and keeps them tied to there job

It'll cause inflation.

One way of helping the less well off would be to give them a fuel voucher to cover the cost of getting to work, for a distance of, for example, 100 miles a week.

Can you expand on that? I don't really understand what you're saying.

Do you pay more for the equivalent job role (ie you pay your salesmen more than BMW, your cleaners more than BMW cleaners) or do you pay your managers more than BMW cleaners?

I don't really understand what they are pledging tbh...so they'll give a business a £1K tax break (costing the government money) in order to cut tax credits and benefit payments (saving the government money)

What difference does that make?

very simple I could pay my employee's BMW but I pay them as much as I can but still keeping the company profitable
our work doesn't have set rates we charge for time & services supplied on a "Per Job" basis
I don't take a wage from the company as I have income from another job I do
this allows me to pay my staff a good wage while we build the company up (been going just over a year)

well if you earn more you pay more tax spend more on products (20%vat) so the government get there £1000 back

Too many people, not enough resources. With a tiny minority taking obscenely more than they deserve.

That has to end. And it will. It's just a shame it'll be by way of violent revolution rather than controlled peaceful change.

But how many businesses will sign up? They're gonna get a £1K tax break for a year, but have to pay people a minimum of £1.14 an hour more which over a 37.5hour week/52 weeks is £2223. So they'll still be £1223 down compared to if they didn't sign up to it.

Confused

yes it costs the employer more but if the company is making enough profit to be able to pay this then why not
its your staff that make your profit so pay them accordingly as long as the company makes a reasonable profit

I'd qualify as I'm already paying above that rate so I'd be happy to take the £1000 and pass it on to my employee's
you also have to take into account as you pay more your profit is less so you pay less tax as an employer on the company profits
its basic swings and roundabouts

I already have an incentive scheme from the dole for employing someone that was 6 months unemployed
they give me £2000 at the end of their first 6 months of employment
this is to help me pay employer NI & and tax contributions
in essence it allows me to pay them a better wage

wouldn't work for us, we have a company van that I pay the diesel for work
my employee uses it as his daily transport at his own cost (inc homers like flittings)
which I don't mind as he does jobs for me as well

I've worked for a lot of company's and bosses that didn't give a shit about their employee's
as long as they turned up and worked they paid them as little as they could
however the guy I currently work for in my other job showed me that treating your staff with respect
and paying them a decent wage paid benefits in the long run
happy staff are more productive, throw less sickies, get on with the job and can approach the boss with no fear of being told to get back to work
because I was working for him abroad and not seeing my family for weeks on end
and for working outside normal contract conditions my bonus was a £3000 bike bought for me by the company
he also gave other employee's similar gifts (paid holidays in the Philippines etc)

that was 10 years ago, I'm still with the company and in 10 years we have basically the same core staff that function very well as a team
and use it as a template for the way I run my business
yes by all means make a profit but reward your staff as well as I said, they are the ones grafting to keep the money flowing in
