Miles better than the bike I have (and hence I would love it), but I'd not buy a new bike without internal cable routing and a tapered headset (doesn't look like it has one).

These may be forgivable depending on the ££?

Planet X have just brought out a gorgeous bike in white and lime green with full carbon, Ultegra 11 speed and internal cable routing for just £1500. Unbelievable value.

Dude, it's a grand. Actually, with the Ultegra carbon pedals and the other upgrades (saddle and Gatorskins), it's £1150, but with that you get a £100 voucher, so I'm gonna try and blag the pedals for free.

It's another Cyclescheme bike, so it will probably work out about £700. Forgiveable enough? Very Happy

Yes. And no. But I've heard nothing but good reports.

Ribble had a deal on recently that was a full carbon with Campagnolo...

Yeah, I know. It was the same last year when I bought my Ribble...

How tall are you and what size frame did you order?

The sizes seem weird for Planet x bikes to me. I'm 5'8 so sizing says small, but the geometry for the small is way smaller than my 54 Felt.

Six foot, and I ordered a Large, which, by their sizings, is a 54. Which is much smaller than my 58 Ribble. Which looks small under me. It does appear that they talk people into smaller frames than they previously experienced, with good results. I might try the full Retul bike fit. See what they come up with.

ps. Got the pedals gratis. Well done Planet-X.

It arrived on Saturday. Looks amazing. Had to wait until today to give it a spin, quick 40km to see how it felt. And it felt good. Smooth as silk and rapid as hell. Seems to get off the mark and respond more rapidly than the Ribble, which feels so much heavier than this. Current weight with the Shimano rims is 8kg. Will try and shave some off that with lighter hoops come the summer.

The only thing that threw me was the handling, which isn't as planted as the Ribble, but feels very light and a bit skittery in comparison. I think I'll get used to it, but it makes it very precise and responsive. I can only equate it to how they made the Eurofighter purposely unstable to make it way more manoeuvrable than anything else. I'm probably way off the mark, but that's what it felt like. Anyway, the roads weren't too filthy this morning to make it too much of a chore to return it to pristine, and it's currently residing in the conservatory as an "art installation". It's far too beautiful for the garage...

You shouldn't clamp a carbon frame, always clamp the seat post.

The thing is, from the other side, it's in accordance.

It's a bit of a Jekyll & Hyde saddle.

I've asked the Velominati for clarification.

This.

If you absolutely must clamp the frame, then wrap something real soft between the clamp and the frame.

On the same token, standard roof carrier racks aren't advised for carbon frames. You are better off with the ones where the front forks are clasped through the quick release skewer.

That is a nice bike....Jealous.

I'm very tempted to get one but knowing how clumsy I am I'm wondering if I should just stick to steel or pay more and go for the Plant X Ti frame... either way, I'd have to persuade SWMBO and then worry about leaving it locked up anywhere in London both of which would take a little of the enjoyment out of it I think.

Are you telling me steel doesn't dent if hit the wrong way?

Search google for Titanium frame failures. Lots of known problems around the chain stay area. Basically it comes apart. I suppose a lifetime warranty makes up for that???

Basically if you crash any bicycle you should have the frame checked over, not just Carbon. On paper it is the strongest material, unless hit with forces it is not designed to with-stand aka crashing into a car.

For the record I have crashed a carbon framed bike on ice, no cracks after careful inspection and has done a further 6,000 trouble free miles.

Crashability should not be the criteria when deciding on frame material. My next bike is going to be a steel bike, but only because I want a light tourer to do LEJOG, bit more comfortable and forgiving on longer rides, mounts for a rack and proper mudguard eyelets. Thumbs Up
