Tags are crap, but some of the work like the above is an asset to the environment it is in.

I think it's pretty axiomatic that graffiti can't be commissioned.

Don't mind if it's graffiti art on removable boards etc.

Graffiti on building exteriors, however, makes a place look like a shithole.

Didn't notice that and had to look again at what you meant.............. it was the Gaza tag

I have not known you be that sensitive and I don't normally get accused of being racist. I wonder if it is just the times that we are in or something that I have said? Although as a tag in itself I would find that also as ruining a piece of art, not because it is in a certain language, but because it is the tag.

I think we are at cross purposes mate, the Gaza refers to the Gaza Strip in Palestine, I think the artist signed the Z.

It looks like Gary has done a tag. Gaza as in Gaza strip still looks at odds with the art work and that style ruins the art, not the sentiment.

Best bit was when the guide told him the sniper towers are only manned during the winter, so he climbed the fence and started painting to be told that it was a joke and they are manned 24/7.

Bristol graffiti festival Thumbs Up

Love the artistic stuff. Bristols got some really amazing street exhibitions (besides banksy works this is also) that are incredibly talented and really make the place look a lot better IMO.

Shoddy half assed beginner stuff tends to look like the stuff scrawled on train carriages though Thumbs Down

Some the the tags and scrawls are the best imo, ones that are in random places, like the ones VAMP does.

Why do all graffiti "artists" have to use this garish writing style?

In fact, why does graffiti have to be so garish in the first place? Why can't it be classy?

Banksy, I will hand it to him, actually does do some nice looking pieces. So are some other pieces of graffiti. But I do not agree when people say that graffiti makes a bad neighbourhood look nicer.

https://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/318/2/6/melted_boi_graffiti_by_one_zork-d4g6hp5.jpg

You see this shit? That is horrendous. Why is graffiti almost always so garish?

No. A place looks nice if it isn't littered, if it isn't spray painted, if it isn't broken. Graffiti doesn't make a shit neighbourhood look better - the shittiness of the neighbourhood is what makes it look shit and a bit of graffiti is only going to reinforce that. The only difference it makes is to passers by who think "Oh, at least they have some nice street art! Oh goodness no, don't put a mural like that on OUR nice, quiet suburban street"

I worry for our future, when our cities may be full of this type of art as people who feel repressed by the massive population we are likely to have in some decades will be desperate to express themselves and make our sterile urban environments look more unique and interesting. The result will be horrific and terrifying streets full of this lurid, garish, disgusting "street art", all those bulbous eyes and jagged writing styles, freakish cartoon characters doing vividly weird things. A vision that is utterly dystopic to me.

I used to love driving through Bristol every day to see what new graffiti there was, OK so I haven't really been around much of Bristol for a couple of months so I feel another little trip over there to have a look around maybe on the cards in the next couple of days....

I admire the fact that it can take several hours and lots of different spray cans for some of the pieces I've seen, I'm not so keen on people just slapping a tag up on as many surfaces as possible, or stuff that just looks shit and doesn't seem to make much sense.... which brings me to some (OK IMO ALL) of the shit done by Banksy? He turns up with a stencil or 2, gets a roller and can of emulsion (I know he uses spray cans... and sometimes more than 2), but as soon as it's spotted then it's like a holy fucking shrine Rolling Eyes
