When the lamp posts are a certain distance apart, you know the speed limits is 30mph, unless otherwise told by sign posts.

What about where there are no speed limit signs and no lamp posts, such as if you leave a 30mph area?

I was thinking this as I was riding along Spaniard's Road through Hampstead Heath last night. It goes from what you can assume is a 30mph due to the lamp posts, then into a road through the park where there are no posts, or speed limits signs. 30mph seems stupidly slow there as there is nothing but you and the traffic ahead.

Obviously it's not NSL but I went 40mph anyhow (I usually stick to 30mph limits).

Probably a stupid question... Rolling Eyes

Probably somewhere in the Highway code...

I think you should treat them as still a thirty until "told" otherwise by a speed limit sign

That's what I thought, but you know what it's like when you're going along thinking "this is stupidly slow" so you speed up a bit.

Hi

A repeater sign is required at regular intervals, except in 30 limits with street lighting where it is not legal to install repeater signs.

There is no formal distance to determine what constitute regular repeater signs, but if you can show that they are not regular then in the abscence of any other signs it is probably, legally, a NSL road.

This might give you some more info:-

All the best

I know the road well. (Was up there earlier today). It's 30mph. You can assume that every road in London is 30mph, unless the sign says otherwise.

Laughing

I've been there before (not on the bike) so I was expecting it.

When I was sitting in the Spaniard's Inn that night I was wondering how many collisions they have there though!
