been about 20 years since I handed in a sick line
back then you signed yourself off for a week or so then the doctor had to issue a line
you got paid Sick Pay from your company for 4 weeks then after that you went to the social security with any further sick lines

I have an employee that has to go in for a heart operation and will be off for about 2 months
we are a small company (3 employee's) and I'll be covering for him while he recuperates

anyone on here know how the system works these days
we knew this was on the cards but thought it was a few months off
we found out on Fri he's going in 2 weeks tomorrow so I need to sort it out so he doesn't loose out on pay / SSP

£80 something per week, but it is only paid after missing 4 days. So he will need to have 4 days off unpaid first, the 5th day onwards is paid.

yes I was
unfortunately it was sold by the liquidators and turned into a supermarket with 8 DHSS flats above it
I lost a lot of money and time trying to get it sorted but in the end a local Pakistani business put up more money than I could so they won
and my town lost the best venue it had left
not that I'm bitter, I know the family and they have put a lot of money into it and spent a lot renovating it
and it will employ more staff than I would have as they will be open from 7 - 11 every day

Not necessarily.

First of all it's the first 3 days of any period that are counted as "waiting days" and you don't pay SSP for them.

Once you've worked out how much SSP you need to pay you can look at claiming it back.

You have to work out what 13% of your total NIC bill (employers and employees) is for the month in which you pay SSP, and you can claim back any SSP paid over and above that amount.

You have to declare this to HMRC before the 19th of the following month or quarter as you don't get any cash back, you just knock it off your PAYE payment for that period.

You will need to declare it by submitting an EPS (employer payment summary) to HMRC as well as your standard FPS (full payment submission) for that month - your payroll software should be able to do this for you. Thumbs Up

Incidentally, if you value your employee and know that him being off sick might cause him financial problems so you want to pay him more than the statutory SSP amount for the time he is off sick you can do so, but you can only claim back the stat amount.

HTH.
