I've just happened across this leaflet which is an outline of driving licence regulations.
As we know the regulations are thus:
Age 16: Category AM
Age 17: Category A1 (125cc, 11kW)
Age 19: Category A2 (35kW)
Age 24: Category A (unrestricted)

Here's an interesting snippet of information:

Quote:
Riders aged between 21 and 23 can choose to take a
category A unrestricted solo motorcycle test if they have
held an A2 licence for a minimum of 2 years.

So pass at 19, then full access at 21. I didn't know this until now and I've never seen anybody else post it on the forum.

Its called accelerated access. Its the only way around the DAS at 24 rules they have put into place. We have a girl waiting for her 2 year 35KW restriction to end so she can come for the bigger bike test.

I do apologise. I hadn't seen anybody else post it, so I wasn't sure if it was common knowledge or not.
As I'm 22, it wasn't mentioned to me. I wish that there was some way I could take the unrestricted test a bit earlier though... I'm 24 in exactly 1 year, 0 months and 1 week.

I'm just kicking my own arse for not sorting this all out last year, in the 14 month window where I could have done everything in one test.

Saying that, I am glad that I got some training on some bigger bikes rather than passing on a 125 and then buying my 650 with no experience.

We haven't really talked about it for a while. It doesn't become significant until January 2015 anyway, which is the earliest anyone can do the new style of accelerated access.

I find this the best guide (except the first page, which I found confusing): https://assets.dft.gov.uk/dsa/dsa-routes-to-your-motorcycle-licence.pdf
