Speak to your tax office, they can check everything out for you and issue a rebate if its necessary. You will get taxed as a student. If at the end of the year your earnings fall below your tax threshold then you will automatically receive a rebate.

This has not been the case this year. I've had to ring up the place in scotland all to get some very blunt answers. And all they seem to want to do is get you off the phone Tesco is not very helpful neither as they just fob you off. If i could just find the tax code from somebody i would actually have something to go on.

You call whichever tax office is responsible for your employer. Generally its the one local to their head office, which in your case may be in Scotland. It may be worth a visit to your local one anyway to see if they can be of any help. Chances are they won't have access to your record tho.

Yeah, but the whole point of the free half hour will be to convince you that you tax problems are so bad that you need to hire them for several hours at normal rates - or to flog you stuff ...

Can you tell that I've had bad experiences with 'financial advisors'?

nope I have had very honest assessments

ie

sorry your tax code is correct and we can't help you

and I fill in a tax return, have a company car, travel abroad, claim expenses, lived abroad, company mobile phone etc.

so mine is NOT simple

but I had it right and they were honest and said they couldn't help

all in a free half hour

My tax code is "NI" and i'm a student not paying tax.

To get it, i filled in a form that declared that i was not going to earn over £4,6?? this year and was attending XYZ uni.

Its up to you to contact your employer, so go find your manager, or whoever deals with wages.

You didn't get taxed when you worked at sainsbuys because you earned less than the personal allowance. Your tax code is entirely dependant on the amount of money you earn in a year (and a few other things, such as if you have PPE provided by the company (personal protective equipment) you get an allowance for washing it etc. this is usually only a few quid anyway)

I believe that the personal allowance currently stands at around £4500 ish. Basically what this means is you won't get taxed on anything you earn under that amount. Say you earn £4600 and the tax level was ten percent, you would only get taxed ten percent of anything over £4500 which would be ten percent of £100. You would pay £10 tax.

Students are NOT exempt from this personal allowance, they just more often than not, do not earn over the allowance.

The ONLY time when your tax may be calculated unfairly is when your current employer does not have a running total of your earnings throughout the year. This is when you get an 'emergency' tax code. This emergency tax code means that the Revenue assume that you have already earned over the personal allowance and you get taxed on the full amount that you have been paid. This can be rectified by handing in your P45 to your new employer, or filling in a P46.

It is a commonly held misconception that students do not pay income tax, and it is a question that is often asked at my girlfriends office. The dumb thing is, most employers don't even know how the system works themselves!

Sorry to rain on your parade Tenthghost, but you can't dodge PAYE!

And to McJam - normally the tax office that deals with a particular company is not in the same town as the company. This is in order that Inland Revenue employees don't change the records of their friends (or even their enemies!).

HTH!

Indeed.

I'm always getting asked about this too. Everyone pays PAYE tax, student, company director, 16 or 45. The personal allowance at the moment is £4615.

If people bothered to read their PAYE coding notices from the inland revenue they'd know this already of course..

Bottom line is, Tenthghost, you have to pay PAYE, but if it ends up under £4615 after the year, you'll get it back.

If you get taxed unfairly its usually the employers fault rather than the revenue. If you get over taxed usually your empolyer will give you the money back by not taxing you as much the next month. If it has passed the quarterly period and your employer has not given you back the money, you can claim it back from the revenue. This may not be paid back until the beginning of the next financial year. Personally I would say that if you have any issues with PAYE then speak to your employer before you ring the revenue. Smile
