Hi,
It''s my mates wedding next year and he has mentioned he'd like some good cigars to have on the night before/ evening do.

As best man i thought it would be quite nice to get some good quality cigars. The only problem is i have no idea what i'm looking at!! I've had cigars before but only the ones the pubs stock so hardly great quality.

I've seen variety taster packs and have considered buying one but again i don't know which to get!!

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Shaun R.

any idea of budget?

Cubans are nice but expensive. non Cubans are cheaper and there are many makers that rival Cubans. i am particularly fond of Nicaraguan cigars.

bargains here

Mel Smith flaunted the smoking ban and he's dead now. See? See?

I am not being judgemental over this, I am just pointing out that smoking a £10 cigar behind the dustbins at the reception in a rain shower is not very cool.

Why don't you ask your mate what he thinks is a good cigar?

If he's not a regular cigar smoker, he won't know the difference between a Castella and a Romeo y Julieta, so a packet of King Edwards would probably do the job.

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial not badly priced, and smell a bit cedar-y.

Or else Cohiba just-about-anything (Madura 5 magicos for preference) Wub

La Rica Gorditos are light to medium, pleasant smokes. The big ring guage makes one feel special.

moderately priced too!

I'm no expert (that'd be ex as in has-been and spert, a drip under pressure) but...

I always thought for decent cigars you'd have to provide a humidor* for them. Despite post above not sure if always supplied, even with the expensive brands.

Best of luck with the search.

* FWIW for those who don't know and can't be arsed bothered to google it's a box to provide constant humidity required to keep the tobacco in tip-top condition.

Only if you're planning on storing them for a while.

Humidors are typically lined with Spanish cedar wood to discourage tobacco beetles and the temperature is controlled to stop them hatching.

The humidity is controlled to stop the tobacco drying out.

Humidors are not the same as tubes, which I believe is what Mr Roberts was talking about.

I've found that any cigar costing more than about a fiver is a pretty damn good smoke. One costing a tenner is sublime.

most good cigars are sold in tube or plastic wrap, which is sufficient to maintain their condition if you aren't keeping them for too long.

Buy a cigar cutter now, before you forget.

The cigars on my stag do were nice, having to bite the bottom off was not.

Make sure you have somewhere to smoke. Puffing through your £10-£15 a stick cigar to get out of the miserable rain is not a pleasant experience.

Edit: Also give me a budget and I'll pick some. It used to be a hobby until I figured out it was utterly unsustainable due to costs.

Hey all,
Karma all round. At the last wedding i went to there was a rather nice wooden smoke hut with heater and comfy seats. Smoking a cigar in there was rather pleasant even if it was a cheap one.

I don't smoke but enjoyed the last few cigars i had (Even if they where cheap) so will be trying some of those suggested.

@Moppy

My budget would be approx 15 quid each for (hopefully) a couple of good quality cigars. Then 5 quid for a few semi decent cigars to have over the course of the evening.

Cheers,
Shaun R.

Well I had a Bolivar No.3 last night and mighty nice it was. Listed about an hour of patient smoking, strong nutty flavours, thoroughly enjoyable. Comes in its own little cedar lined tube so you don't have to worry about it drying out.

Should definitely be considered by you since it only costs £8 or something and it's widely available.

Awe..
How could you Ariel?
You have ruined the lassie's day before they have even signed their Death Warrant.

Crying or Very sad

I do agree though, cigars do not like a downpour one bit. And they can be a bastirt to light in a blustery wind. They also make your mouth taste like a ashtray that someone has washed there soiled kegs in.

You would pay a tenner to burn and ingest the smoke/ash particles of some tropical weed plant? The production of which has historically (and currently) exploited many thousands of the world's poorest people in order to further the profits of a handful of capitalist-pig bastards?

I smell Double Standards Sir.

I've only really been into Cuban cigars, but if you're asking for suggestions I'd imagine you'd be quite happy with non-Cubans.
DEFINITELY get a reasonable cutter. I love my Palio but you don't need to spend that much. Get a twin blade one though, or you may find a punch easier to use (less likely to get bits in your mouth too).

The Chinchalero Picadillos are quite pleasant for NCs and are a nice size but most of the others I've smoked you can only buy in the USA. If you're buying from the UK, there's not such a huge difference in price between Cubans and NCs due to cigars being taxed by weight.

Do you already smoke cigarettes? Some of the stronger ones can be a bit much if you don't. If you find yourself feeling rough from the nicotine, drink something sweet.

cigars-review.org is a good site to give you some idea of flavours, though I found some just don't agree with me.

Tubos are a good idea as they'll be happier outside of a humidor, though the selection is nowhere near as wide.

Some of my personal favourite Cubans are:

Juan Lopez Seleccion No.2: Mid to high strength, good pub cigar, goes well with Glenmorangie.
Bolivar Royal Corona: Very strong, complex, goes well with cola.
Partagas Serie D No. 4: Strong, complex...
El Rey del Mundo Choix Supreme: Light to medium, rich and tasty
Vegas Robaina Famosos: Medium, chocolaty!
Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto: bit expensive for the size but flavours are spectacular.
Jose L. Piedra Petit Cazadores: cheap but one-dimensionally tasty (prune/raisin). Can be found for about 1 Euro each 'on the internet'.

Cohiba are expensive and grassy young; avoid in this case.
Montecristo are a bit pricey for what they are, but you'll likely be happy with them. Diplomaticos are pretty much equivalent but a bit cheaper.
Punch are probably worth a try too.

How will you be buying them? PM if you want some links to shops or other advice. If you're only after NCs, I'll happily send you a bunch on the cheap as I don't smoke them...

Henri Wintermans Slim panatelas. Not too costly and a good smoke.
