My NSR's reaching the 10,000 mile mark, and while the engine work will probably be sorted soon enough, the exhaust itself is beginning to annoy me. Rust that flakes off if i scrape it with a screwdriver is beginning to worry me, obviously some prat at honda thought mild steel was a great material for downpipes.

What I want to do is have the exhaust off, wet and dry it, respray it, and put it back on.

The problem is, having taken exhausts off NSR's before (when I stripped my other NSR), I know that if they bend i'll never get them back on, and my dad is dead set against the idea.

Eventually the exhaust's going to have to come off, because i can't stand the rusty red colour - it just doesn't go with black gelcoated panels Wink . What I want to know, is, what are the dangers in redoing my exhaust/downpipe? Is it worth the trouble? What if it rusts through? what if i hole it by taking away the rust? Will I be able to get the bloody thing back on again?

All help greatly appreciated - i want to get this out of the way as soon as possible.

Hi

The exhaust should come on and off the NSR quite easily. The metal should be fairly thick (and they regularly rust on the outside). Not shiney but BBQ paint should do a reasonable job of protecting it.

All the best

Keith

If you have trouble getting it back on, just leave the middle bolt out.

I think you would have to be a bit of a plank to bend the exhaust by simply taking it off Surprised take off the manifold nuts, get someone to hold it at the other end if your worried about it falling off and snapping. Take off the bolts holding it on the frame, move the exhaust to the right and slide it off.
