Hi all.
Just in the process of fitting some Chinese replica fairings to the 'Blade. (Very well made and finished, incredibly low price too).

I've got them in the Pons West livery, and come with some extra decals, specifically, the Loris Capriossi numbers that go on the back plastics.
Now, my hazy memory recalls that this is frowned on by the boys in blue, that these decals come seperately adds to that impression.
Anyone know anything definite about the legality of race numbers on a road bike?

Cheers

If that was the case, all those new VW beetles with 53 on them are fucked...

If its not a huge decal saying 'fuck off' or 'police' i doubt they will give two fiddles.

Most subaru imprezas would be down the crusher if they didn't like race decals.

when looking at classic cars and building rally / race reps the advice often given on forums was that race numbers shouldn't be on as motorsport is illegal on the road. If you are driving a vehicle with numbers on, they should be crossed out to show that you're not competing.

in reality, some care, some don't.

I reckon they're being really overly cautious, by that logic this would be asking for serious troubles. Number and a racing themed flag decal. See similar all over the place and they're even produced off the factory line like that on some 'sport' editions, which would indicate its not an issue or the manufacturers would be more cautious what was being stuck on their brand new expensive cars.

It's not the law that doesn't like it, it's the MSA.

Q11.1.2. "11.1.2. Competition numbers must be covered at all
times when driving on the public highway."

So, if you're driving a competition registered vehicle, you have to cover the numbers up, if it's an ordinary road vehicle, you don't, but either way it's not a nick.

I'm guessing it's going to be more of an issue if you're riding / driving like a nonce.

If you look like your racing and have racing numbers on...

When competing in a road rally on public roads (MSA), you MUST be displaying competition numbers, not all events have the same regulations

That only applies to cars that are actually competing, not just mooching about:

MSA Yearbook, R6.1. "Any means of identification fixed for the
Competition must be removed when a Competitor
retires, is excluded from, or completes the event."

I believe you are supposed to add a strike over it when not in the competition - for instance, going for a pub meal in the evening.

I have numbers on one of my bikes and never have any trouble (and I live right by a massive police station).

Allow me to whore a stolen photo to remind me of happier times before I binned it...
