I was riding to work going around 50-55MPH then suddenly something clicked and the bike came down to 40mph almost instantly and wouldn't go above that. it's also making a horrible loud sound like metal vibrating when you rev the accelerator. It sounded like the brake disc had come off the front or something! I think maybe the clutch has gone on it? I can ride it but it doesnt rev high at all and sounds like it will stall on higher gears. I can go max maybe about 30mph on it?

:D oh dear..........see cmsnl for whats involved with the clutch, is it nutted on or circliped on etc.........

does the clutch behave normally?? or is it being difficult to get in gear or out of gear, and does it seem to slip??

any noises coming from the clucth side of the engine and does the engine rev freely when its out of gear? does the engine start normally and does the exhaust glow red hot?

drop the oil and see what metal bits come out, a pic would be good.

i wonder if its broken a cam gear? this engine is cg based???

Are you sure it's the clutch?

Clutch behaves normally. It sounds like its slipping and does take a few seconds to slip into gears. Metally noise is coming from the gear level side mainly. Engine starts normally exhaust is fine. It still makes the metally clanking noise when its sitting in neutral. same as when its in gear. I'll try and get a video of the noise at lunch time seeing as I'm at work at the moment.

I'm pretty sure the 125 XR engines are CG based just geared differently.

Yeah.......I'm gonna have to ride it home, luckily the ride home is only about 5 miles so I'll take it slow. Don't really want to have to call the AA. I was going to get a bike mechanic to come and pick it up on monday to take it away to fix but thought it would be worth asking if its something I could do myself over the weekend.

depends whats wrong.........see cmsnl for the exploded views so you know whats involved, if the clutch is circliped on , may be that has come off????????

where is the oil filler/dip stcik?? and what can you see when its out?? can you see the clutch "gear" and/or crank "gear"......is there a tooth missing or damaged??

see cmsnl..................drain the oil and examine, and take it from there............if considering a garage, remove4 the clutch cover and have a look.

its best not to ride/run this engine till its fixed.

if you can post the relevant cmsnl view ( of clutch, how its held on, how its driven and weather there is a centrifugal oil filter fitted to this engine ) on here, do so........it can only help. :karma:

Most XL125 engines are more like the CBR an overhead cam unit
I had the version for a time nice until I lunched the gearbox in an off road spill and the bits did the cam chain and valves

Check the oil level if OK drain and look for broken bits and thin filthy oil
The check valve clearances

These engines don't do well with dirty / old oil

The 2003 onwards XR's use the CG based engine!
The earlier XL's use engines based on the 1970's CB100 engine!
