Rather than waste money on a Superdream, I decided to start buying little bits and pieces to build a race bike out of, for next summer.

Financially quite stable now, Private work on cars is buzzing, so got some spare cash to put into a half decent track bike.

Started out with a set of Marazocchi rep, adjustable forks I saw on the Bay.
Then I picked up a Brembo caliper for £11. The caliper it's self, is the same unit as fitted to KTM660s etc, and usually go for around £90 online, but as the one I bought, came from an old Yamaha Majesty 125, it was cheap. Laughing

And it's kinda just growing from there.

Today, I sold another rear beam for a Clio, so with the cash, I've bought a 3 piece billet swing arm (Same as the one fitted to my old TZR pit bike), and a nice KLX110 style SDG trellis frame.

In an ideal world, I would love to build a Mk2 version of this:

In reality, although it was stupendously fast, and got looks literally everywhere I took it. It also crippled my wallet, and ruined my social life, as I spent every living and working hour maintaining it. Laughing

I will update later on next week when parts start arriving.

Binge, Go for it mate! These bikes are your niche and you do them very very well!

Those forks look pretty chunky and high end in the pit bike world. I think you should use a KMX200 motor in the next one though TBH! Thumbs Up

Off topic, but as a little nip into town and get stuff bike, I really do fancy a Kawasaki KSR80 now, never seen one for sale, but would this still be classed as a Pitbike, and if so are they a decent one to be getting?

The KSR (They also do a 110), is basically the daddy of the pit bike community.
I really like them! But I cant help but mod/upgrade my pittys, and unfortunately the KSR (And KLX110) are different to the Honda CRF50, which is what all pit bike engines are a replica of. So any upgrades for the Kwak have to be either genuine, or from a company such as BBR, or TBR, which means mega £££.

Regarding the forks I've bought. They really are quite nice for what they cost.
My frame arrived yesterday too, which is really quite nice quality. Unfortunately I can get it painted until I've decided what I am doing engine wise.
Go 2-poke, and I cant enter any race series. But then going for a pit bike engine, I run into all the reliability issues, unless I go standard YX140. Then I just struggle on the straights because it has to lug my 14st ass along. Laughing

I've always fancied a decent road legal pit with a honda innova 125 lump, Id use the honda wiring and electrical components with decent switchgear etc convert it to manual clutch and maybe big bore.

the innova is good for 70, does over 100mpg and Ive seen them with over 70,000 pizza boy/courier miles.

basically build my own msx125 but without the gay modern styling and general lardiness!

I know it's not about it, but do you have anything on the TZR pit bike, that thing looks really cool? Thumbs Up

Might have an NSR engine I could be persuaded to part with - got rad, carb, electrics, exhaust, too.

I have a standard 140 and I'm probably 13.5st with my leathers on, you do notice it against the light lads but it's only for a laugh for me, I'm never going to win.

RE: a 160/170 engine. I've been there, done that, and flown the flag, on a lot of occasions.

Not only are they time bombs, they are stupidly expensive too.
And then if I was to race, I'd be in the Adult Open class, which is anything up to 200cc, and any mods go. So you're lumbered in with CRF150 supermotos, which come past you at dangerous speeds on the straights. NOT fun!

As Garth says, you do notice it. You can carry as much corner speed as you like. If you've got a skinny minnie on a 140 exiting relatively close to you (behind), they pull past on the straights with ease.

Honda Innova, I've thought about.

Garth, PM me with info on your NSR engine. I'm interested.

And RE the TZR pit, I had a heap load of photos on my desktop PC, but I formatted it last month. I will have a look. Used to have a build thread on it.

This is a video of it on track. The camera is on board Mart, who is on quite a fast pit bike anyway, and he is one of the leading riders in the NMRRC.

It'll be epic whichever way you go TBH!

But having done the TZR pit bike once already, and knowing how excellent it was and unique and probably worth quite a lot to sell on as a 2stroke nutter one off, I think you really need to do an Mk2 and enjoy the lol's again one more time before you move on!

The idea of having an expensive to build really tuned big bore pit bike engine that needs a lot of maintenance and re-builds along with expensive go faster parts to make it competitive seems a lot of ball ache to me, and not wallet friendly at all.

I'd much rather for a fun or road bike have something like the Honda AN125 engine or a fairly std 125cc Chinese clone etc.

But if you go to the trouble of the 2stroke, then once it's fitted and set up you won't need to touch or tune it, and you'll have massive power as std!

Garth's NSR125 engine sounds ideal, and TBH for a project like this if my KMX200 motor had been re-built already I'd have been willing to flog it you cheap as well, as it's an awesome use for a 30bhp 2stroke single! Laughing

Just been poking around online for engines for sale, or cheap MX bikes I could use as a donor really.

Yes! I will consider anything if the price is right.

Part of me really wanted an actual MX engine. But then for reliability, and long term, as I'd like this on the road (daytime use jobby) eventually.

Are you far from Kent? Id collect the whole bike if it's going for a scrap sort of value. I'd obviously pay.

cheers,

Ben

This is the racing league hosted by a few of my friends. I was all ready to race last year, but circumstance changed and I sold the bike.

There are a few classes. If I run 2 stroke, it'd need to be <85cc, and I'd have to enter the Adult open class.

I've been thinking about this too! Got a friend who races them in Spain.

Realistically, what sort of money are we talking about?
Noob friendly?
What bikes/classes would you recommend for beginners?

Sorry for the thread hijack.. Smile

You can knock a bike up for under £500 quite easily.
It wont be the best, but it'll certainly get you by, and give a LOT of fun.
