I have had pain in the region the tendon attaches to the heel for many years but this summer it ripped hard pushing a bike onto a trailer and I have had it fail on me every day or so if my foot bends over 90 degrees walking up stairs etc. Saw Dr yesterday and she has sent me to orthopedic consultant. What do I expect time in plaster or a bit of knife work and plaster? The tendon is no longer attached to the bone on both sides of the heel, we can feel bits of it just loose and as painful as hell if you poke it with a finger Mr. Green

Surgical repair and 6-8 weeks in plaster would be not beyond the realms of possibility. Maybe with further casting or a locked hinge brace to dorsi flex your foot incrementally to gradually stretch the tendon.

Edit: I meant dorsiflexion rather than plantar flexion... perils of posting after midnight..

To clarify: They are likely to cast your foot slightly angled downwards to reduce tension on the tendon as it heals (plantar flexion). The then could recast with the foot slightly closer to 90 degrees, the recast again after a couple of weeks and so on.....
