Apparently the Queen's fuming about it. A Palace spokesman said when she catches up with Anne, she's going to bite her head off Mr. Green

I`ve eaten horse meat in the past and wouldn't have a problem with eating it again.
As with all animals reared for their meat, it`s about their welfare whilst they are alive, and ensuring their deaths are quick, clean ,and as painless as possible?

Maybe a few folk need to think about where all the meat in their tins of cat/dog food comes from?
Or what happens to all the pet/race/stud/working horses go to once they shuffle off their mortal coil?

Given all the foreign jaunts they go on I wouldn't be surprised if all the royals hadn't been fed it at some time or other. It'll come under being served as a local delicacy don't you know.

I'd draw the line at cats and dogs but that's just a cultural thing on my part. If it's part of someone's culture I can't really object. Just as long as they don't want to impose their culture on me Very Happy

Princess Anne, Sarah Jessica Parker, Camilla Parker Bowles and Leona Lewis are to star in a show about rich, pampered women looking for love.

The show's going to be called Desperate Horsewives.

She says we should eat horsemeat does she?

I remember not too long ago we were all told that we were eating horsemeat, but it was labelled otherwise, so we should do just what we've been doing? (with appropriate labelling and prices)

Ok...

Just another machine for converting grass, which I can't eat, into meat, which I can.

Tasty, tasty meat.

Got the rest of the story.
She wants debate on eating horse meat for the horses welfare.
For some reason old horses in the past might have been put into the food chain.
Now, following the horse meat as beef scare they are just left to grow old.
So their welfare suffers.

So treating as a foodstuff will mean better care for the horses.

IMHO a bit of lateral thinking there. Strangely, I can see her point and I can also see why it appears to make sense.

I'm just waiting for the counter argument. Hopefully it will be a little more than "Uuurrgghhhh, you'd be eating Black Beauty/Shergar/Red Rum/My Little Pony/etc.".

As I understand it the issue is down to certain drugs which when given to an animal render it unfit for human consumption. These drugs cause serious diseases in Humans when ingested. Apparently it is next to impossible to ingest enough horse to get a meaningful dose of this drug but it is still illegal.

If people were allowed to eat horse then it would be correctly regulated and you'd know what you were getting. I suspect this is where Princess Anne is coming from.

I think we should start eating members of the royal family. Starting with Anne, as she looks so much like a horse.

The amount of trade tax funded holiday trips andrew makes I wouldn't be suprised if they've all be bloated on dog, cat and pidgeon meat from various 'V.I.P treats' from China's elite that hes brought home as souvenirs Laughing

Yep, that's the long and short of it between 'food' and 'not-food' horses. A common drug used in 'not for food' marked horses is something called phenylbutazone which can cause some serious toxicity issues if consumed by humans which is why it is ONLY to be used in animals that are 'not for consumption' but it is a very commonly prescribed NSAID in horses. If I remember right, a lot of the hoohah over the horses that came from Romania etc was that there was no real information as to where they had come from or what medications they'd been treated with in the past. This is why horses are meant to travel with passports etc and are clearly marked as 'not for consumption' or as 'for consumption' as this dictates the medications that will be administered to the animal throughout its life.

Personally don't see the issue over eating horse so long as we know a. where it's come from and b. that we're appropriately tending to their welfare prior to consumption.

I find it interesting that a royal (especially one with a prolific sporting background with horses) has stepped up with a 'pro-consumption' point of view given that at uni, it was the equine lot that were the most outspokenly against it whenever the topic came up Razz

Wouldnt have a problem eating horse. Eaten lots of other meats people are only recently starting to eat. One of my favorites was ostrich. Its bloody tasty. Eaten snake, crocodile, shark which was like mushy nothing. Really not worth the effort. Kangaroo.

I ate horse a few years ago without realising it was horse. My sister thought it would be funny top order the steaks for me while we were away. Tasted very nice and I didn't have any issue over it.

If we had it here I wouldn't mind as long as the label was correct.

The only meat I won't eat is Bunny or knowingly any animal genitals.

Buffalo, rabbit, kangaroo, springbok.

Not had horse so far as I can tell. Rabbit pate is nice but the roasted rabbit I had at a very nice restaurant tasted a little too strong to me (perhaps because I wasn't used to it), but was otherwise fine.

Rabbit cooked properly is lovely. Wrong and its tough as old boots. We used to serve a game terrine in one of the restaurants I ran. Rabbit, wild boar, pheasant all cooked with pork meat to bind it together. Bloody tasty but very rich.

One of my boss's when I was training brought back some form of antelope dried from South Africa. It was nice but not great.
