Hay guys. Iv been on here for a while but never really contributed a whole lot.

This will be my first ever project and I have 0 mechanical experience. So this could be a huge saggy flop. In any way you could get a laugh out of it I suppose.

The bike I'm working on is a '91 MZ ETZ 125. Iv had it for a couple of years now and it's starting to look rather sorry, so a strip and a tart up is in order. I want to get rid of the commuter look as well just for the sake of individuality and make it into a more enduro/trials looking machine with maybe an actual conversion to make it more hill friendly.

I know a few guys here have owned mz's and know the mechanics, so if I epicly fuck up, you guys are going to be my saviors. That's the plan any way.

The bike as it was

Rust everywhere

https://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad56/vlissoi/DSC_0832_zps03468a24.jpg

Springs need sorting out

https://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad56/vlissoi/DSC_0833_zps09cc715c.jpg

Both of them are like that, previous owner bodge

https://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad56/vlissoi/DSC_0834_zps2649899c.jpg

https://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad56/vlissoi/DSC_0837_zps99ceedcf.jpg

An idea of the levels of rust on the bolts, plenty of penetrating fluid

https://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad56/vlissoi/DSC_0841_zps539ed5bc.jpg

At the minute the front wheel has been taken off along with the calipers, they will all be repainted.

The rear wheel is a cunt to get off as the bolt is rusted on, going to try heating it if the penetrating fluid doesn't work.

The frame is nearly stripped, only parts left are the forks, rear wheel, electrics and the engine assembly. And I will take them off as soon as I acquire some tools that are not from the 1970's and are in metric instead of useless imperial.

Hope you guys follow my project and mentor me Smile

Tony

True though, they are just industrial style sheds, look far better in a state of dismay.

I'm going to brake the standard then, and have something with no chipped chrome of rust spots.

Plus for the price iv got this bike it makes a great hack to learn the mechanics.

Carrying on with the project. The frame is pretty much stripped. 2 bolts are seized. One on the rear wheel and the oil draining bolt (last owner tightened it way too much) Waiting for the right sized wrench head to arrive so I can take the yolks off. I'm going to leave as much of the wiring where it is now so I dont have any any major headaches later trying to put it back in place. Half of the nuts are rusted, bolts are snapping, rust spots in the frame. Despite people saying it looks better in a state of dismay, I'f anything, i'm giving this bike another decade on the road as well as potentially saving my life, kind off. As well as learning loads about bikes

After a very drunken weekend, back to the bike.

Back wheel finally came off, took a lot of time with a blow torch to crack that bolt, but it's there.

The engine is coming out as soon as I get a 24 mil. spanner. From then on the progress will start to escalate rather quickly as the only things need doing is part refurbishment, painting, greasing and maybe some chroming, mechanically this thing is sound, for most part.

Where it currently stands

The forks are staying on, Ill paint the yolks on the bike

A box of parts that need repainting, chroming etc. etc.

This pic doesn't show that well just how shagged the spokes look. The wheels will be refurbished.

https://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad56/vlissoi/DSC_0850_zpsdfdc6b72.jpg

Chrome is starting to peel.

As far as the mechanical exercise goes, so far I understand everything and learning a whole bunch. Maybe one day i'll be able to rebuild the engine with the gear box.

TBH looking at the frame design I just cannot really visualize a successful looking trail bike being the outcome. The best I can see is something a bit like a SACS Madass or Derbi Terra look to it.

I think it would make a nice enough cafe racer or a stripped back street bike however.

How about now? (The red bike is a VERY successful trials bike).

Isn't the red one using a more conventional double cradle style frame though?

I know you can have perimeter framed dirtbikes, but to offer sufficient engine protection I would always want a lower under engine cradle and a sturdy bash plate. This is why I don't see it making for a good Trail bike.

The MZ ISDT bikes I've seen are all the later design with a much more motocross style frame and LT front and rear suspension set up.

I'm sure you could bodge on some LT forks and shocks to the std ETZ, but for a decent off road bike that needs to be able to get over logs and obstacles etc, I think it's not that much cop as a basis for a good off roader.

To the best of my knowledge, the frame rails bolt on the ISDT bikes.

The one in the picture has a double tube spine frame (two tubes, one on top of the other) with a single front tube attaching to the front of the engine. The engine is a stressed member and there are a couple of bash-rails bolted on underneath the engine.

Bit of a necropost there. But cool bike none-the-less. I've got a 251 that I need to finish putting back together but other stuff keep having to take priority. Sad

What happened to this project OP?
