 |
|
A few weeks ago i managed to fry my bike alarm its not hugely expensive but i'd obviously like to get it working again, its out of warranty not that i have the box or receipt (brought from a mate)
Its a sola-larm sla-807 (if thats helpful)
What happened - while playing with the electrics i managed to knock the ground off the alarm which i presume killed it off.. it dosent chirp or respond in any way (it would beep when it was connected up)
My question is, what component/s in your common cheapish bike alarm would be fryed first? i'm thinking capacitors, resistrors, transistors, diodes e.t.c. i can't see any visible marks on any of them i'm planing on going around it with a multi meter but even then i'm not sure what i'd be looking for..
Any ideas? or even places to ask would be useful... not sending it off to be fixed because
a. no money
b.would no doubt be cheeper to get a new one for what i payed...
I have a soldering iron and can use it well enough, parts would cost pence, i just need to know where to start looking...
Any help would be... um helpful ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

If I was you I would plead dumb, take it back to the shop and tell them it never worked. Hopefully they will replace it or get it fixed under the 1 years manufacturers warranty. ____________________ Past >>>> Honda NSR 125 >>>> Suzuki GSXR 600 K1 >>>> Suzuki GSXR 600 K4 >>>>Kawasaki Z1000 DAF >>>>Suzuki RMZ 250 >>>> Current >>>> KTM Superduke R 1290 >>>> |

Just knocking the earth off won't kill the alarm, in fact that's the correct way to disconnect it! In any case 99% of alarms are reverse polarity protected via the main diode, check the alarm fuse and make sure you have given it a good clean earth before continuing. Next just read the instructions and make sure it's not waiting for you to go into setup mode or something silly like that! If all those check out, the main diode is about the size of a match head and is soldered to the power rail on the pcb inside the alarm. It is identifiable by the fact that it is black with a silver stripe at one end, it should allow current to flow through it one way but not the other (a one way valve!) so make sure you have power at the end with a silver stripe, you will need a multimeter for this! Do not use any other test equipment!! If all else fails take it to a radio repair shop and see if they will look at it for you. Good luck ____________________ Here comes the summer! |

excelent, thanks for that, i will have a look at it later when i get chance, its a while ago i tryed last, it SHOULD have worked afaik, unless as you said i missed something.. hopefully it will be something daft, otherwise it look like a fairly simple bit of equipment, by simple i mean it wont need anything more than a soldering iron to fix it, and hopefully it won't need that
i'll let you know how it goes  ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

Glad i could help Just a thought i see by your profile you are a student, do you not have a college or uni tutor in electronics? Most would love to show just how good they are by fixing your alarm! Just a thought. ____________________ Here comes the summer! |
