Bike Stuck in Neutral - Please help

Hi, long time lurker first time poster.

yesterday I changed my chain and sprockets, everything went fine with the change, apart from I accidentally snapped my push rod!.

I don't have a centre stand, so did the change with the bike on its side on the grass, i had sprocket cover off and subsequently snapped the push rod when laying her down.

It was a clean break, nothing got stuck.

Anyway, i have put the push rod from my Suzuki GS500, into my Suzuki Gsx600f, after neatly cutting the GS500 push rod down to 9cm with my dremel to match the length of the gsx600f pushrod (both seem to be same diameter too)

the new push rod look exactly the same, diameter and length...but upon starting my bike im finding the bike wont engage into first.

I know the clutch is working, because it wont let me start the bike until the clutch level is fully pulled in. When i put it into 1st, the neutral light goes out, but i can still push the bike back and forth with the clutch not pulled in ????? when i put it into first, it makes a clicking noise, but not the loud 'clunk' that it normally would.

in neutral with the back wheel off the ground, if i give it gas the wheel spins pretty fast, so the chain/sprockets seem fine, not locked up or anything.

anyone any idea's? The bike was working absolutley fine the other day, its just since i changed the chain and sprockets, as they seemed to be getting a bit tired.

not sure how pulling the clutch in and it starting proves that the clutch is working? pulling the clutch in i would have thought just operates a switch on the clutch lever and lets the engine start.

sounds like your push rod isn't adjusted correctly or the length isn't quite right

yes you are right, i was just making aware of full facts.

but yeh, bike wont start if clutch not pushed in....but when i put it "in gear" the neutral light does go out aswell.

but obviously like i said, i can roll the bike along with putting clutch in, and it doesnt make that 'clunking' noise when i put in first, second or third.

if the length is even a milimeter out, would that have an affect? i didn't think it would be so detramental. measuring them up by the centimetre they seem pretty spot on.

wonder if the push rod is too long so the clutch is always engaged? that would explain why it feels like it's stuck in neutral. you'd be changing gears but never get drive to the wheel.

ok man, im going to grind a little more off it tomorrow, it looks like it could be a milimetre or 2 longer.

Is there supposed to be a ball behind the rod to stop wear? they are easy to loose.
