Instead of going through the cost of building my own my plan was to just stumble across one locally that i could get for a bargain,

anyway, is this good value or is it one of those pc's where the spec looks impressive but they use slow ram or some other shit?

3DMark reckons that GFX and CPU combo has less power than a gaming laptop.

Why bother? £ for £ a console gets you just as much fun without the hassle. I gave up trying to understand all the complexities of motherboard/processor/graphics combos.

Thats a useful site Thumbs Up

While my ps3 is fine, it just doesn't have the games, i like sim racing and the ps3 has nothing like it apart from maybe project cars which hasn't been released yet, and gran turismo is just laughable like F1 2013 is when it comes down to the driving physics and amount of freedom you have.

i think my best plan is to keep looking for good gaming pc's that are on an auction within a 30 miles radius that are collection only, eventually something usually comes up

I only teally play Battlefield so not worth building a pc for that. I used to love Gran Turismo but just lost interest.

The thing i hate with gran turismo besides the physics is all the license bullshit and unlocking cars and shit, why can't they just fuck all that off, have all cars unlocked and just let people race with what they want, i didn't play GT much but getting into a fair online race was near impossible and i lost interest as i simply couldn't put the time into the game to earn all the cars, with pc games it's all there straight away + the modding community

I think the unlocking of cars through race victories was ok but the licences was anal autistic teenager "pro" "gamer" bullshit. Modding community basically translates to cheat community though. Look at any streams of PC players and they're always pointing out cheaters.

depends on the game, with rfactor, if any files have been modified it lets all the other racers know that there is a file mismatch and won't let them race unless the host allows it.

but yeah there's alot to hate about gt, i especially hate the fucking waiting room music they play when you're navigating the menu's, so that always gets disabled Laughing

Points against:

1. Y'know - AMD.

2. mobo gfx

3. Less than £300

Points for:

1. It says X11 on the case, that means it's 11 times better

2. It says ULTRA FAST in the ad, and they should know.

3. Less than £300.

The clincher is the blue lights in the case. Everyone knows only true gaming PCs can have blue lights in the case. Done deal.

I'm buying two.

aaawww crap.... that's the case I've got Sad

But it's got BLUE lights all over it*... that and 3 120mm blue LED fans and 1 without.... actually the case is quite sturdy compared to my last one Rolling Eyes

*OK maybe not 'ALL OVER IT', but 3 led fans, blue led power button, several leds on the front... and maybe... just maybe I'll replace the red HD light with a blue one Twisted Evil

what are you currently running in your pc ben? if you have one?

here is an interesting read from anandtech

when only using a single grahpics card, a CPU that is 4 generations old will get you within 95% the performance of the highest end CPU.

spend as much money on the gpu as possible, anything else comes second.

Thats good info to know, i'll have a read of that site, i'd like to spend around £100 on a graphics card, preferably second hand if i can rely on someone selling a perfectly good card but just "has" to have the latest thing so the current one seems worthless Smile

i think i should put more RAM in to?

the desktop i have

a6455.uk
M2N68-LA (Narra3) motherboard
32bit OS vista ( will obvioously put win7 on )
amd phenom 9500 quad core 2.20ghz
nvidia geforce 8400
3gb ram PC2-6400 MB/sec
500gb hdd

the game i'm looking at playing is Rfactor2 and this is what it says off the site that is recommended.

RECOMMENDED MINIMUMS (will run well, may look better with better hardware):
CPU: 3.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or 3.0 GHz AMD Athlon II x2 or better
Memory: 4 GB+
Video Card: nVidia 250 GTS or ATI/AMD 4870 or better
Video Memory: 512MB+
Operating System: PC Microsoft Windows Vista 64bit, Windows 7 64bit
Storage: 4 GB+Notes:
1 – 2008 C++ Runtimes SP1 required (included with installed)

you're not much off the spec, and going by the anand review, that processor is perfectly fine for single gpu gaming, i'd watch ebay for a second hand 670, which can be had for a little over 100 every now and then. very efficient quiet card, which will play anything, including BF4 at max settings at 1080p. would be fine for rfactor2

next would be the ram, chuck 8 gigs in there https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/kingston-memory-8GB-Kit-2x4GB-DDR3-1333MHz-/151170091423?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item233270899f

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kingston-KTH9600B-4G-4GB-PC3-10600-1333MHz-DDR3-ECC-PC-RAM-Brand-New-/161157882712?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item2585c22358

can be had for 20 quid, but if you're really strapped for cash just chuck 1 4gb stick in and take out the 1gb and make do with 6.

thanks Thumbs Up

will i need a more powerful PSU for this card?

it's saved alot of hassle knowing i don't have to buy so much new stuff / all new setup altogether

We've played rFactor on some right shit machines, the problems come when you ramp up the number of cars on track. My mate is currently running rFactor 2 on an Alienware laptop with everything wound up and it's all good, not sure how it would fare with a high number of other human racers over the internet though...

Get 4GB of PC2 6400 DDR2 in a 2x2GB kit. Shouldn't cost anymore than £30.

What PSU are you running? If buying another avoid Jeantech, CiT, Arctic, or anything that weighs less than the box it was delivered in like the plague...if they go pop, and there's a good chance they might, it would probably take half your system with it.

Buy something second hand that is boxed, modular (if poss), has all the cables and, most importantly, is from a reputable manufacturer like Corsair, OCZ, Seasonic, Antec etc. It is the most important part in any PC and too many people scrimp on it.

Something from the Corsair CX Builder range (500w?) would do you nicely.

GPU wise, I've just bought a GTX 470 sh from a forum for £35 delivered to go in one of the kids PC's...that sort of thing would suit you down to the ground. I feel a 670 would be a bit of a waste of money as your cpu would probably bottleneck it

From the info page off the HP website, it just says 300w power supply Laughing

So anything faster than DDR2 is worthless with my current motherboard? it should be ok though, Rfactor isn't known for having amazing graphics it's all about the actual gameplay with it, but saying that some of the really high quality mods have dropped my fps massively in the past Laughing

so, to get

500w PSU
a GPU for around £100, i'm thinking i'll probably end up getting in to other pc games again and will inevitably end up pushing/overclocking the machine eventually, so might aswell get a good card to start with, and upgrade other bits as and when?

also 8gb DDR2

My current system cost about £311 to build over 2 years ago.... and still good enough for HD graphics on medium or high for most games.

Excluding drives as I already had them from my old system:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 BE, Nvidia GTX 550 ti, 8gb DDR3 1333 mhz (OK so I'm using windows 7 and it says it's only using about 3.5gb atm), a 35 quid gigabyte motherboard, and 750w psu (now upgraded to 850 as it was in a bundle with the above mentioned case)

Your mobo will only run n DDR2...put DDR3 in and it won't even post

...and that PSU is fine....I had the first bid on it Laughing

Put DDR3 in and it will either break the ram slot, the motherboard or the DIMM.

My PC has blue lights on it and they are super cool.

There's a good reason for it. The case cost me £20 and since I don't have a tower the size of an oak tree with a THOUSAND teraflops of raw power, it does the job as well as every other case. It's black too, and every other case at the time was either grey, grey with silver trim or beige.
