Hi guys

After a few minutes of riding my bike will stop revving then die. It won't turn back on for a little while but will just happen again a few minutes down the road. It's not spluttering to a stop just the revs start to go even with the throttle on until it stalls, although it is mostly when I'm coming to a stop at traffic lights. Lights and dash will stay on until its happened about 5 times in a short period, then they'll go too. Once I've left it for a while it'll start up fine and idle at the right rpm. I don't think its carb icing and I've checked the battery which seems to be fine although I'm not exactly an expert on this stuff haha.
The bike is a Honda 125 Varadero.
Please help!

Thanks
C

Have you checked the battery voltage with engine running at about 4000rpm?
It should show above 14volts.

Sounds to me that your battery isn't receiving enough voltage to keep the fuel pump working. It may have recovered just enough to turn the engine over and start it but the more revs you give it the harder the electric powered pump has to work.

2002, with the bike at 4000rpm it was averaging 14.5-15.3v

It shouldn't go over 14.5v really...

What is it when just ticking over. Light on/off.

I'd half be expecting the regulator, but never heard of it on a Varadero yet Thumbs Up

If I remember correctly just below 14.5, little bit higher with lights on

Blocked air-vent in the fuel tank?
Coils breaking down as they warm up?
Resistors in the plug caps giving up as they get warm?
HT leads breaking down?.
Fuel lines collapsing when warm? (partial blockage further up the line, like inside the tank)
Alternator?

If I remember correctly around 14.3 just idling and a little bit lower with the lights off. the reading jumps about quite a lot but I have no idea thats normal or just my cheap battery tester

With lights off, I'd be expecting roughly 13-13.5v. Mine with lights on ticking over is 13.1-13.3v

I'd check the regulator..

Sorry not sure what happened there.

If it was any of the ones you listed pepperami would they have affected the lights and dash?

If the volts are too high why would the bike die? thats probably an incredibly retarded question, sorry if it is!

The lights going out sounds like a bad earth if anything.
See if it still does it with a bodged in additional wire from neg terminal to frame.

Its not just the lights that eventually die its the whole bike, doesn't even make a noise when I try to start it. Don't know if that makes a difference

Sounds exactly like the symptoms i had when my battery died...it would recover right back up to 12.6 volts after a few mins with everything turned off but was holding bugger all...so even with the charging system (engine) running it had bugger all capacity and would drop so low that all the electrics died...

That had crossed my mind but when I first start the bike it'll happily sit there for 10 minutes without showing any signs of fault and the battery tester showing the correct, albeit a bit high, voltage. Surely if it had sod all left in it, it would die? Although I guess it might be a case of its just got enough to keep the bike running until I actually start using it. Really hoping its something simple!

Just to rule out the obvious, the battery terminals are nice and tight arent they?

Well if any of the electrics have broken down and the alternator is still functioning ie making electricity , that electric has to go somewhere?
So something gets hot? and slowly breaks down? or more volts?/amps? go through an electrical circuit that is not able to cope and a coil?/regulator?/relay? gets zapped, possibly maybe.

I had a Suzuki GT 250 and it kept dying and was a real swine to diagnose.
I had the coils tested and they came back as fine.
It later turned out that they were breaking down under prolonged load so it didn't show up at first!
