is it just my dream, or does it exist, be great for the kind of job i'm in

and im not talking about WAP crap on mobile phones, but a laptop with proper internet without the need for a phone line or cable

probably quite expensive if it does, but can anyone enlighten me?

You can set up a wirless LAN at your home, no problems. I'll have a dig around for the kit for you, but someone will most probably reply with more info before I do... but yes you can relatively easily set up a wireless LAN networkl!

LAN is not the thing really, i want something that will work, wherever i go for work, so down in Portsmouth or wherever, as inet facilities for the services in this country are sorely lacking

Hi, I figured that just after I posted my first reply.. I don't think there is a way to get net connected whilst out and about other than mobile phone.. but ask carvell for more info about calling ISP thing as it may mean it won't cost you any more than normal monthly charges?

No chance of finding it here yet Goose.

I know in San Francisco, a local company has placed Wi-Fi points around the city, and anyone with a 802.11b (I think) card in their laptops can access free, fast, wireless internet.

And areas not covered by that free service, theres usually a home wireless network running that the owner hasn't locked down, giving people who are in the area access to their LAN and internet connection. Laughing

I'm currently trialing a 3G service for a major mobile operator and just got it to connect to my PDA after a bit of tweaking. I did it through Bluetooth, and it is certainly faster than the usual GPRS system that is currently in use. I imagine though that when it launches it will be expensive - the best way is to find a Wi-Fi hotspot, they charge about £4 an hour for connectivity.

If you go to https://www.wi-fihotspotlist.com/search.php?street=&city=London&state=&zip=&country=GB&network=&proximity=1&submit.x=66&submit.y=15. There is list of Wi-Fi hotspots in London

Goose,
We've only got to wait a few more years until we get satalite broadband. Basically you'll have a PCMCIA card in your laptop which identifies you and your account. Go anywhere in the world with wireless internet.
Cheers,
Mark.

If you a wireless lan enabled laptop (or PDA) then there are various wi-fi hotspots all over the place. BT openzone have hotspots in nearly all macdonalds. Other provides have them it petrol stations and costa coffees (or starbucks)

I have an IPAQ PDA I use either with my mobile phone or at a hotspot. BT openzone if very expensive the phone is not to bad but is dam slow on GPRS (9600) but does email and stuff, depends what you want to do.
Can can get mobile satellite connects but you would need to rob a bank first.

bye

On my dads laptop that i'm on hes got a "orange mobile office card - sony ericsson GC75 - High speed data / GPRS data card - GSM 900 1800 1900"

From a quick read of the back it receives upto 57.6kbit/s and transmits upto 28.8kbit/s

Don't know how well it works as i doubt he knows its there. I guess it has the same coverage as a GPRS phone. Its gots its own sim card, so i don't know if you need seperate rental for it.... Confused
