Dodgy relay?
Power cycle would be resetting the relay. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

got a multi meter and a wiring diagram??
if not buy a meter, one with a diode test (makes a beep when you have a circuit) like this , great for the bike, or car, auto ranging, or if you want something a bit more universal then this ac/dc amps as well,
diagram is here
also a tin of contact cleaner is a must, unscrew your handlebar switches and give it a good spray in there ____________________ the humans are dead

Agree with the loose relay dodgy earth, the main lights are off untill you start it up then the main light comes on, so hitting the starter must be resetting the relay as said earlier..
Also then it must rely on a signal saying the engine is runing where it gets that from im not sure ?
Interesting qestion.. ____________________ Fuelly My Z1000SX

what you describe, first i would check the switch on the handle bar,
just unclick the connector
then i would test from the blue/yellow wire (feed from relay) to the
red/yellow wire (low beam) and then the red/black (full beam)
click between the full and dip a few times and make sure its always getting a good connection,
if that tests out ok, (probably will, but its nice and easy to get to)
next is checking the continuity between the relay and the switch
so one probe at relay end and the other at the switch end on the blue/yellow wire, give the loom a wiggle at the point wher the loom could move, (it'll probably be ok as well)
next check, both the headlight relay and the starter relays, they are linked in a stupid way i might add, if the starter relay (secondary relay) de energizers it also takes out the negitive to the headlight relays coil, and which in turn de-energises the headlight relay,
thats why if you click the start button, it re-energizes the starter relay, which completes the circuit again,
the most likely problem is one of the connections around the relay box area is dodgy, this should be under the seat somewhere,
stupid design, the headlights should be completely independent of any other part of the electrical system ____________________ the humans are dead
