Hi,

Wondered if anyone could advise me?

I've went to see a Thundercat tonight and it has kph instead of mph. Under the seat on the chassis there is a sticker that displays B and then a digit code. I believe this stands for Belgium? Well i definately know this cuz it's where the bike came from after Japan.

Basically the guy who is selling it has bought it as a brand new bike from a uk dealer. This dealer obviously got his bikes from Europe (e.g. Belgium) as i guess they are cheaper? What i want to know is whether this will effect my insurance, i've read a few things about it not being an issue at all, especially the fact it's the sames spec bike but has kph rather than mph. Unlike Jap imports where i believe the actual spec of the bike can be different?

Anyway, it seems like a beautiful bike and he has all the docs etc so it isn't a problem that way.

Also how big a job (if possible) is it to change the dials and speedo to one that displays mph as well as kph? + Can anyone recommend someone who can do this near Edinburgh?

Help would be appreciated!

Also, just passed me direct access today so shall be a first bike, can't wait!!

Mat

moratx do a stick on convetor for the speedo from KPH to MPH in mechcaincal and electrical (about £20) , check the bikes log book (V5) for defnate proof that it is an import, parts should be the same as a uk bike and if it is an import it would be a parrell from beligum so insurance should,nt be differnt from a uk bike

Hi

Other thing to look out for is a headlight dipping the wrong way.

Technically it must have an mph speedo with supplementory kmh markings (so technically a mechanical converter to gear the speedo down so that the kmh markings are now mph markings is not actually legal unless you then put on additional kmh stickers). However I have never had a problem MOTing a bike with a kmh only speedo.

All the best

Keith

My bike is an import from Italy - the speedo is in kph. It's a bit annoying (even with mph stickers over the top) but not a major problem. Also it gives me a bit of a buzz knowing my bike once zoomed round Italian streets Very Happy

thanks for the replies. Are you able to get a new dial for the speedo? One that shows mph and kph in samll like every other uk bike. The mileage would still clock up in Kph's but can't change that.

Also, do you know if a mechanical convertor will start clocking the miles up in miles as apposed to kilometres?

converting completly converts from kph to mph (most likely a 8:5 ratio gear) this will turn the speedo slow and allthough its in kph still it will actually display your speed in mph. ie when it says 40kph you are actually doing 40mph. this will also cause the bike to clock up mile traveld from now on adding on 1km for every 1 mile.
