Anybody know much about his type of job? Pay scale etc?
https://www.medicalcouriers.co.uk/careers/bike-courier.html
Unemployed at the moment and the thought of buying a bike and using it to courier medical samples etc sounds alright.
I know there are couriers on here who are going to say.."you can't do it, you don't know how hard it is, it takes a special person".. Blah blah blah... just want to know pay, and hours.
I know you have to be a jedi to be a courier, but I am the chosen one! And the force is strong in me. ____________________ Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. |

Well there's no such thing as set 'pay' in the courier world nor are there set hours. You start and finish according the the needs of the clients on any particular day usually.
Personally I've usually spent up to 10 hours on the bike by the time I get home, though there may be some time sat up between jobs.
Where are you as you don't say?
Money isn't great with the price of petrol at the moment taking a large chunk out of your earnings along with every other running cost you will need to meet yourself which includes buying a 'suitable' courier bike to start with - and paying a very large insurance premium.
Can you meet the start-up costs?
If you think upon the lines of minimum wage plus occasionally a few quid per hour on top of that (looking at the number of hours you'll put into it and spend working on the bike in your free time) you will notice it is not the path to riches it is proclaimed to be!
Yes you can get by doing it but in all honesty a very large chunk of your income will go on running costs which are inevitably going to be high for the mileage you'll be doing and wear and tear incurred.
Are you looking to work in London or elsewhere?
It takes a fair bit of time to become an 'accomplished courier' in London and I wouldn't expect your starting income to be very much
simply because you won't know your way around well enough to be quick, dependable and efficient.
If on the other hand you're working further away and doing mainly longer runs then the learning curve isn't as steep though I'd say the same thing is true in that you need experience before it becomes at all worthwhile. |

Basically you'll be a lewis day courier (now owned by shitty sprint) that delivers blood and samples.
Probably the same pay as everyone else and most likely i'd presume there isn't enough medical stuff to keep you going all day every day so will be doing the every day tenders and pointless papers we all do.
A lot, if not most will welcome you with stories of 2k a month and all happy happy. A £250 a week retainer blah blah and then after doing a london to glasgow the day before you turn up still fooked the next day 10 mins late and lose your retainer and bonus.
This means ALL the work then goes to those that still have a retainer to be paid and IF there is anything else left you may get a job.
End of the week you can cough up for your bike hire, radio and pda rental, uniform hire etc etc and go home a happy boy with £70 in your pocket.
It's very much a shitehole of a business to be in for a newbie, the companies take the pi$s regularly.
If you go for it don't wear rose tinted specs, keep your eyes and ears open and if you think something is too good to be true it most likely is a load of bull. ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse? Works in London, but I don't think Bristol has anything in place, so you'd be starting and running a business from scratch rather than just jumping into the saddle.
If it's anything like London, you'll need to have a bike type approved as a taxi (it's Pan Euros in London), have advanced riding training, and be licensed and insured as a cab driver. Late November might not be the best time to start such a business either.
Of course, if you'd put 30 seconds of thought or research into it, you'd already know that.
Again, your root problem seems to be that you're bone idle. With respect. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

What part of Bristol?
You working at the mo?
Got courier insurance?
I do get the occasional job come up in Bristol but not anywhere near a weekly wage type of level ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse? I'm not bone idle, I'm asking out of curiosity on a bike forum to get peoples opinions, while applying for as many jobs as I can in the meantime. It was just a thought that popped into my head, which I haven't put any weight behind yet. Then after finding out what people think or advise then Id make the decision to search properly.
I do appreciate you replies though.

Why not? The speed a bike can get places must be beneficial in more than just couriering. Just need to think of that special niche.
| Quote: | What part of Bristol? |
Im actually Chepstow, so equidistant between Cardiff and Bristol.
| Quote: | You working at the mo? |
Not at the moment, just came back from a year in Canada and starting life from scratch again.
| Quote: | Got courier insurance? |
No, but if it was worth becoming a courier outside London then I would be looking into it for sure.

I've also heard good things about delivering for Perfect Pizza (not how much £££ though) |
Yes I can drive a car. Sounds like a good way to drive heaps of different cars. Going to look into that now. Pizza delivery doesn't appeal too much. But If this lack of job keeps going then i'd be open to anything. ____________________ Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. |

A bike type approved as a taxi? Where are you getting that from!?
Virgin use FJR's not Pan's.
You wouldn't need to be licensed as a cab driver as they're offering a service akin to minicab private hire firms, I don't see where advanced rider training comes into it either.
Where are you getting this from!? |
