Hello

I'm looking at collecting a motorcycle that's a fair few miles away, insuring it and then riding it back. Problem is the motorcycle is out of tax, what would I need to tax it and am I right in thinking I have to be the registered keeper? I will be signing the log book and dating it the same day I tax it, do DVLA have to be informed before or will signing of the log book be suffice?

Thanks for your time.

To tax it you need two things:
-V5c number (logbook)
-MOT

The easiest thing to do would be to ask the person you're buying it from to stick on some tax for you, as they'll be able to do it online in about five minutes, assuming it has an MOT.

Don't forget insurance certificate.

Don't forget insurance certificate.

Reminds me of Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition sketch.

Off topic BTW but just heard surviving members of Monty Python getting together for a stage show.

On topic get insurance first.
Then if you book an MOT you can ride it to that.
If it passes then I usually ride bike home and buy tax online.

Perhaps your route to the MOT place takes you past your home where you stop and seeing a possible issue with the bike decide to phone and cancel the MOT Wink

Had same problem recently. Bike had MOT and I could get insurance. However, could not buy tax online as would be sent to previous owner as V5 keeper change not processed. Also could not get insurance cover note in post in time, could not print off from internet either. Did ask seller goto post office and get tax and I'd give him the money on top of purchase price. In the end the seller rode it the 15 miles or so to my house and I gave him a lift home. It was his choice. If stopped he'd just say bike sold and being delivered.

You do not have to wait for the new V5. To tax you can take your insurance certificate (or cover note), MOT and the green new owner bit torn from the old V5 (old owner should sent rest of old V5 back to DVLA).

Get insurance, print off certificate, get the new keeper slip off of the V5C, and get yourself and those bits of paper to the nearest post office ASAP.

The chances of being caught, prosecuted and convicted are very, very small.

Sorry guys, I should have made it more clear. I was hoping to tax online before I set off to collect but I understand now.

Thanks for help.
