Hello, I'm pretty new to bikes but looking to purchase a new bike. I really like naked bikes and i'm torn between these two. I would be looking around the 2011-12 plate. What are peoples thoughts and pros and cons?

I can't comment on the FZ8 but i have a GSR 750 L3 and i love it. I mainly use it for commuting, 15-20 miles every day in stop start traffic through town and a quick blast on the dual carridgeway. Its brilliant. I have taken it out for a blast with some at the weekend with a mate that has a Street triple and although its not as quick as the triumph it holds its own on the road, handles well. Feels planted, and sounds brilliant when you open her up. I had a full power for the first 2 weeks of owning it and it was brilliant... now its 33bhp because of my licence Sad it pulls well to about 85 then no matter what gear your in, it pulls like a snail and is boring Sad cant wait for my restriction to end!

This. This weeks MCN's feature on modern classics actually used the GSR as an example of a bike so mediocre it would never become a classic. Group tests at launch time featuring the FZ8 weren't exactly effusive in their praise for it either.

The Street Triple has won pretty much every sub-1000cc group test for two reasons. Firstly, because Triumph probably paid them the most. Secondly because its a bloody brilliant bike, the engine is excellent, the frame is from a proper sportsbike and it can do fun or sensible equally well.

If you want to make up your own mind, test ride the Striple then the rest and come to your own conclusions Thumbs Up

I was surprised by the fz8, In a bad way, my friend purchased a 2012 plate one a little while back, and obviously, as you do, we ended up going flat out next to each other (on an open public road of course) and it was no faster than my 1999 600 hornet, it could not get past and he told me afterwards that he did indeed have the throttle all the way back and took each gear to the redline. Surprised me a little as it has 200cc more and 14 years less abuse than my bike.

Think you should at least test ride the MT09 before you decide.

What criteria, apart from looks, do you think a GSR is better than a Striple? Buying solely on looks at the expense of everything else is acceptable when buying something exotic, Italian and expensive like an MV or a Bimota; less so when we're talking about a humdrum Suzuki.
