On my daily round trip of 100 miles between Fife and Hamilton I have noticed that suddenly the bike count has dropped in the last few weeks from double figures to just one!

Is this a similar trend around the UK?

Where's everyone gone.

A lot of bikers can put up with 10C temperatures. Not many do when it drops below that.
Above 10C means I don't need thermals or handlebar muffs. Below 5 and it's on with the ski pants and bodywarmer worn over everything else.

Pass the popcorn ...again.

This will probably be my last winter using the bikes. I don't know why I didn't get a car years ago...then I see a bike at the front of the queue or one swooping around a corner and I forget just how practical cars are...Maybe a van...A van with a bike in the back. Thumbs Up

Just a quick report from the land of the beer: Everything here is covered in ice, it's quite hard to walk on it and I think it'd be instant crash if I tried to ride my bike on it. Thumbs Up

It's cold. I don't have a problem with that per se, but I've had the lurgee for the last 3 weeks and frankly can't be arsed with riding when I can take the car, be warm and enjoy spectacular coughing fits without a helmet on.

I even took the train the other day. Neutral

My choices are the Tube or the bike. Let's compare 6am journeys in the middle of the winter:

On the tube, I start near the the edge of the Central Line (at Ruislip Gardens, where the trains come out of the depot), a 20-minute cold, dark walk from my door. When the train pulls up, the windows are frosted on the inside and the heaters are blowing freezing cold air. I slowly become hypothermic over an hour or so ride in jeans and inadequate jacket. I get out at Liverpool Street Station and walk 10 minutes to the office. Often in the rain. I arrive at work wet & freezing. I also often catch colds from my fellow sneezing, wheezing passengers.

On the bike, I get into my multiple layers of warm, waterproof gear, hop on the bike and have an enjoyable, relatively traffic-free ride (at that hour) and arrive at work in 30-35 minutes, parking right next to the front door. Dry and warm. I haven't caught a cold in more than a year.

If there isn't snow on the ground, there's no contest.

Couldn't agree more, this fair weather bike thing is a load toss. I choose not to ride my bike in the freezing cold torrential shit filled uk roads because I don't HAVE to ride it, it's about having the choice.

For me bike = toy so what's the fun in getting raped by the ice or any other hazard just waiting to pounce!!

Winter is about garage time, fettling on a nice winters evening with the garage door down and ur favourite music on Smile

It's not too cold yet. I'm still getting sweaty wearing my textile jacket while riding the bike. Not even wearing long johns yet either!

Winter hasn't even begun...

As a new biker one of the main motivations for me to pass my test recently was so that I could commute by bike instead of being raped on a weekly basis by First "Great" Western.

It will need to be some pretty horrific weather to force me to use the train again.

Let me guess, you're down South somewhere? How far do you travel?

I go to work at 5am and we have had snow and ice already. The last time I used the bike it was -2 degrees, I've not bothered since. At that time in the morning it takes me around 30minutes to do a 20+miles commute. Makes no difference in the car or on the bike. Coming home there is about 5-10 minutes difference. Really not worth it.
