My CBF600 manual says to check oil every time you ride the bike. That seems a bit much to do before every time you ride to work due to the time involved waiting for the bike to warm up. How often do you check yours?

It's worth checking at every opportunity. Before long trips, after long trips. Whenever you're working on the bike, it only takes 30 seconds to check the window or use the dip (whatever it has), and it could save you weeks of hassle with possible rebuilds if it happens to run dry..

Some engines can be extremely good at keeping the oil one minute, then suddenly after a trip it might be a litre down... Not worth the risk IMO.

Check the oil with the bike cold for a start... no need to warm it up, just check the right amount is in the sump before you turn it on.

Probably every few days, then again I haven't ridden in about a month. Laughing

For me... about once every....6 months. Usually when I buy the bike and then just before I sell it. Thankfully, Ive never really had any that's drank oil. Laughing

Depends on which bike I'm riding Laughing

But as a rule of thumb, it only takes a few seconds to peer in to the sight glass and ensure there's something in there.

That depends on whether or not you have a centre stand. Of you don't, you have to find someone willing to hold the bike upright whilst you peer at the sight glass.

Trust me, that can take several hours...

Neither of my bikes have centre stands, I am still able to check the oil level perfectly fine on my own through the sight glass.

Thanks for the tips. The bike has a dipstick so I think for commuting I’ll check it when I get home rather than waiting for it to warm up before stopping it and checking it.

Errr no. Take dipstick out, wipe it. Put it back in. Tilt bike so its level, put it back on its stand and take the stick out again. Check level.

Not every bike has a dipstick.

Just as not every bike is light enough to (safely) hold upright whilst you get down on your knees and look through the inspection hole in the fairing to see the sight glass.

You should check your oil when the bike has been stood a while, and there is no need for it to be warm. Just push it out the garage and check the oil before you start it up.

I check mine every 3 or 4 days.

Whenever I put petrol in it. (~200 miles) Force of habit really, having owned two cars with a penchant for the golden stuff. Luckily, the CG doesn't seem to have the same issue. Thumbs Up
