Has anyone successfully done the above modification to their bikes? I've found quite a few guides but a lot of the time they contain inaccurate information talking about speedo drives from the front wheel.

I'm left in the situation where I have more than one guide to follow but not sure which one is correct. At £100 a wheel I don't have much to go on.

The only reason that I'm doing this modification is so I have more tyre choice.

I did this for a 1999 Hornet, which I think is the same wheel.

The only things that needed changing for the new 17" wheel were the discs. The inside mounting hole that the discs sit around on the wheel was a different size on the 17" wheel.

Spacers, spindle, forks etc. were all kept the same. The speedo was driven from the front sprocket on the Hornet so that was fine.

Hornet would appears to have 3 spokes and the CBR has 6. I'm not sure if they're identical other than that though.

Do you remember what front wheel you used? Popular choices are VFR800, but others seem to prefer other wheels, which is where the difference in instructions creep in.

Same with the CBR900 which is why I don't trust a guide that claims to be for my year bike, which then tells me how to fit the speedo to the front wheel.

Ok, it was a 16" Hornet wheel to a 17" Hornet wheel, so my advice is potentially all wrong Very Happy

If you don't have a front wheel driven speedo then the instructions are likely wrong.

You could always email a seller of a wheel and ask them to measure up various dimensions for you

I did this to my RR-X so you can take this as gospel.

The W / X models forks are fatter or closer together than the previous models. This means that the standard CBR 600 / VFR 750 wheels that match in design place the disc rotors too far out by 2mm each side. The VERY easiest fix is to have the hubs milled down 2mm on each side. There is plenty of meat at the mounting points so does not weaken the disc mountings at all.
I gave my wheel to a local 'engineer' who milled it 2mm alright but in total, i.e. 1mm each side. (So be careful choosing your machinist).
The other way is to mill 2mm off each caliper mounting. Easier to do and does not significantly reduce the strength of the caliper mounts, but.... You do have to play with wheel spacers as the clearance, disc to fork leg, is minimal.
I have seen Blackbird rotor mentioned as they have less off-set, not so dished as the 'blades disc centres, but that will get costly.

Thank you very much. If I had enough karma to rate your post, I would mark it as helpful.

Can I just confirm that any VFR750 wheel with the 6 spokes like the CBR will work?

Hi. As I recall the later VFR750 wheels are the ones, same with CBR's. Early ones had a different disc mounting system, its obvious when you compare them. Use E-bay pics to get the general idea.

Well spotted. Must be the early VRF800 that has the same disc mounting by the looks of it.

Thanks again Smile
