After putting a new head on my Kawasaki gt 550 Ive just put the carbs back on haven't put the air box back in yet as i just wanted to see if it would start. Am almost 100% sure that i got the timing spot on yet when i tryed starting it i got a big pop back that blew the carbs straight off the bike. Is it bad timing or just way too lean with no air box? or have i put the spark plug leads on the wrong way. Thanks

It seems unlikely that you'd get it exactly wrong enough to backfire without lunching the valves, so...

So double checking the firing order would be my first port of call.

you didnt mix up the cams by mistake did you bud ?? valve clearences ok ??

my mates old xs650 used to blow the carbs off with no filters fitted, i didnt realise a lean mixture would cause that but on his once the filters were on no prob, take em off and 1st kick would pop them off......spooky Laughing

If it's blowing the carbs off the bike, then it's igniting the mix with at least one inlet valve open. That would suggest the timing being out by 180 degrees.

I had similar when I rebuilt the zxr engine, when I'd put it all back together and tried to start it, it would just turn over until eventually there was a loud bang and enough smoke coming out of the airbox to make me think something was on fire in there

When I took the top off the engine again I noticed I'd set both camshafts to EX Embarassed
