hey i'm getting my first bike or i should say moped, as thats what it is

its a Kawasaki Ar50 on a G plate

i know these are slow, but at the end of the day its only a 50cc and i'm only 16 so theres not much i can do really is there

couple of questions

1. wheres the cheapest place for insurance?
2. 35mph is the top speed?
i) i can handle a 35mph top speed as i like slap bang in the centre of a city so i cant expect much more ... however i'm not impressed at the 15mph up a hill claim, what modifications could i do to make this a little bit faster??

thanks in advance

Alan

Well to go faster up a hill, you can always get off and run along side it. Aside that, just scream the tits off it in a low gear and abuse the clutch.

Insurance doesn't have a single cheapest place. Either call every company for a quote, and play them off against each other, or pay Danny on this forum 30 quid and he'll do it for you.

I think they should do more than that (not sure if they were restricted).

For insurance, everyone is different, so the only thing to do is to ring as many companies as possible.

To make it faster I think you can get a cheap 80cc kit... will give it a decent amount of go; about the same as a 4 stroke 125.
If not, I believe the 80cc ar engine slots in.

How long till 17?
Crazy money spent modding it up is not even worth doing really unless you are used to off roading and are turning 16 soon.
If you turn 17 soon, ride it, endure the slowness and mockery, turn 17 do your test, get a 33 braker and blaze all cagers away.
As for 35mph... i imagine thats a tad low with if it only does 15mph uphill, its restricted. My old derbi gpr only did 15mph uphill (which most people can sprint faster then quiote merrily) when it was restricted and jsut nipped 50 downhill. However when derestricted it did 50 uphill no problem, and 60 downhill.

So first chance you get (ie full day off with no bike commitments) take the exhaust off and ave a shifty in the manifold, if its not restricted the opening should be the diameter of the pipe (if that makes sense) whereas if its restricted it will either have a washer in the manifold or a tube welded in.
If that IS its derestricted speed (lord help us), basically, carbs, zorst, barrel etc. But frankly they decimate your chances of selling as rebores tend to always seize, but its up to you. Like i say its more dictated by how long you are stuck on it.

Hey, you can always hang onto the back of a car is one way to make it go faster... Rolling Eyes Razz

Seriously though, with insurance I normally look at online companies first of all as I find it can be a right pain in the arse phoning around them all. I'd probably start by googling the word 'insurance' and seeing what companies it chucks up. For my car insurance I found that Churchill were pretty reasonable and I think they do bike insurance as well. Most insurance companies I also find target a specific customer they want i.e male, 25, no claims blah blah so it really is worth phoning/emailing around loads as its surprising what you can save.

The online places never give good quotes, the only use they have is to get quotes to compare how one bike is to another in terms of insurance costs.

Just get a copy of Bike Trader and call every single company in the back of it, once you've got it down to a few call them back and play them off against each other. Takes quite a long time, but you also get good saving on your insurance by doing this. Or you can use Danny's Insurance Finding service.

It is, I agree, but when the 41st company I phone knocks £200 off the price, it seems worth it.... takes me a while to earn that much and that's a decent night out or a tarty bit for a bike Razz.

ah but how much have you just spent on your phone bill ringing the other 40? Razz Laughing

making it faster? first check the restrictions yes. but then don't get a cheap 80 kit, an expensive 50kit will go faster. if your going to buy the whole lot in the end get it all at once. if not, exhaust, barrel, crank, carb, reeds basically, if not crank before barrel...

Most of the insurance companies have free phone numbers to call them on, yes some have number which are charged at national rate, but that isn't that much and even if they knock £10 off your insurance you've still made a saving even with the cost of the phone call. It is worth calling pretty much all of them even if the call does cost some money IMO.

It's a cc upgrade kit. Basically a new barrell (Cylinder) and head with a bigger bore. New (slightly larger) piston and rings and gaskets.
