I'm quite fond of red wine but, white wine makes me wanna puke tbh. Sick

As HT said, get yourself to tesco and try some of their wines out. They usually have some reasonable ones on offer (half price ect...), so start there and try some out.

Personally, I typically prefer a nice red from Southern France but, don't mind spainish or Italian reds either.

Sorry that I can't offer any guidance on white wine though.

I find a lot of the coop wines are very acceptable.

My current favourite is their Explorers Sauvignon Blanc.

For a red, you could do a lot worse than their fairtrade Argentine Malbec.

I think you'll find that's Pinot dear boy. I tend to be a Shiraz man myself, a bit lighter than a Merlot, but quite plummy and good with strong cheese.

Co-OP used to do a nice Corbieres that was lovely, haven't seen it for a while though...

The dirty secret about wine is, to the inexperienced tongue, its all the same - i.e. wine. Get into the habit of drinking it on a regular basis and you will develop a preference, but for the once in a blue moon wine drinker? Nothing the supermarkets sell is going to make you spit it out and go urghh*.

*As long as it doesn't have either a number below 12% or the word lambrini on it

Au contraire, mon petite fromage. If you're going cheap, go lower alcohol. Forget the 13% stuff, think more like 11%, 10 if you can find it. Lidl do some English wines at 8% which are surprisingly palatable.

I stand corrected. I'd still avoid the lambrini though Smile

Go to a local independent place and spend a tenner on something you cannot buy in the supermarkets. Take reccomendations from the person in the shop.

If you don't like it at all, wine is not for you. If you do like it, it will be a much more pleasurable experience.

This will save money in the long run, over buying multiple shit fiver bottles from supermarkets...very few of these are palatable. In the hope of finding one you might like.

Hate wine personally, but the times i have to drink it i find the rose wines are most palletable. Less hangover than red particularly also Wink

All taste the same to me but maybe i'm not into them enough to notice the difference betweem a 4 quid and 20 quid bottle Laughing

For a first bottle go for a Australian or Californian White. Due to the climate these tend to be a bit fruitier. There are some nice wines from New Zealand as well, Try Freemans Bay Sauvignon Blanc from Aldi, not too bad at all.

If you go for general supermarket stuff then Wolf Blass or Lindemans are a safe bet.

The rule of thumb I was given for cheap wine is generally the older the better.

The biggest saviour of cheap wine has to be one of these

I find Sauvignon Blanc to be very drinkable. The Spanish do some nice easy to drink ones. There was one I got from Sainsburies called Vina Sol. It got my girlfriend into wine. It's a fresh citrusy wine and goes well with white fish dishes and roast chicken.

For reds, in Tesco there is deal on an Australian wine called Yellow Tail, they do a Shiraz which is very nice. They also do a very good Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

First off, the cheaper bottles you tend to pay more for the bottle than you do the wine. Move up ever so slightly and expect to pay £8-£12 a bottle and you're in much better territory - liken it to beer; you'd not buy smart price ASDA cans for 58p when you can buy a can of Becks for 75p - get your mind thinking a little more money = a lot better tipple.

Second off, decide whether you want to get into red or white first. There's such complexity in the different types of each that getting your head around one first then experimenting with the other is usually a good shout. As it's Christmas, and not summer, I'd go for reds first. With that said, a lot of people get on better with white wines first as they're somewhat more forgiving and easier to drink.

Third up - decide on the body of the wine you want to try first. I'm usually up for heavier, much fuller bodied wines with a kick so I tend to shy away from lighter bodied wines but I do keep some, as occasionally I just want an easy drink, or I'll be having friends round, or the dinner I'm having isn't perhaps suited to a heavy wine. Starting in the medium body range would be my suggestion as in doing so you will be able to get a feel for the mid point and decide which way you want to go from there. Here's a list of wines by body:
https://www.rantsandwines.com/2010/02/17/wine-serving-chart-light-medium-and-full-bodied/

You'll see there's quite a lot of cross-over. Reading the reviews of wines online will give you an idea of where they sit, if they're popular and have been reviewed.

Last off - region. A lot of people get snobby about region - personally I don't, if a new world red tastes good as as French wine I'll still buy it. With that said, I adore Loire Valley and Languedoc wines and stick to those where available. A cracking Sancerre or Pinot Noir suits me just fine (despite what I said about liking heavier reds - there are exceptions!).

Final tip - I buy all my wines from here:
www.nakedwines.co.uk

They deliver very reliably, they're cheap for the quality of the wine and there's a good selection. Well worth looking into.

These are all wines that I've currently got in the rack that are exceptionally good for the money and just about middle ground:

I can recommend aldi for decent inexpensive wine. Toro Loco and Vina Decana are both good easy drinking reds and in my opinion their hungarian chardonnay is an absolute steal. However as arry says spend a bit more and you'll see a considerable difference.

The Toro Loco they do is indeed reasonably drinkable. Not a bad shout that.

The Toro Loco Tempranillo that Aldi stock and sell for under £4, kicked the ass of some much pricier examples in a blind test around a year ago. The shelves were emptied overnight and customers were limited to a maximum of 3 bottles when the shelves were replenished.

It's said that they can also be used to enhance the taste and condition of lagers.

In another recent thread, I wrote:
I like the odd wine now and again. One of the best tasting I've had in quite a while is the Chat-en-Oeuf Red, £6 a bottle at Waitrose. I might stretch to £15 for a bottle, but anything above that can fuck right off.
