Hi,

This is my first time posting on here so forgive me if this is in the wrong section etc or has been posted before, will give you the story what has happened etc

Bought the bike and was running fine, I was aware that the clutch button needed replacing and this was set to the off position. anyway was riding the bike no problem then we had some bad weather and the bike was left out in it for a day although we didn't have bad weather for the complete day.

When I next come to start the bike it started to try and turn over and turned over once then I let the bike stall due to revs being to low and then when I pressed the ignition button I got a clicking noise and nothing with the engine trying to turn over.

I have checked the web and advice from a friend and it sounded like the starter relay to them, this was after the battery was charged fully, the starter motor pulled off and cleaned etc.

When I went to buy the new starter relay Honda was apparently wanting to charge me £110 for the starter relay/solenoid, but going to another place they have sold me a universal unit which is ok to use for Honda/Kawasaki models.

When I got home and opened the piece it was a slightly different layout to the starter relay that I had.

From top to bottom
Old layout; terminal screws - wires - fuse
New layout; terminal screws - fuse - wires.

My question is does anyone know how to correctly wire this because all that seems to be happening at the moment is that I am blowing fuses, I have seen a video on youtube of someone replacing a starter relay on a CB400 and it was the same sort of design as my new piece and went like this, inc colouring of the wires

terminal screws
fuse
red/green - red/yellow
red - red/white

Had the same problem even after rebuilding the starter motor. Turned out to be the starter motor sticking. I had mine connected directly to a fully charged battery and after a couple go's, it's freed off and it's worked ever since.
Maybe easier to try bumping it while holding the starter button, Might catch and free it off...

Ok so we have worked out the problem on the bike.

Basically the starter relay had gone, and in taking the starter motor off and cleaning it up the 'Brush Terminal (bolt one)' wire had snapped so we have managed to solder this back on and this now works, starts on the button etc etc

But ...... (always a but)

We now have another problem, the Neutral light was staying on all the time last night, so due to failing light left till this morning when I had a look at the wiring and have altered the wiring, now the neutral light comes on at start when in neutral, you out it into first gear and light goes off .... yay ..... then when I pull the clutch in (even to change gear) the neutral light comes back on ????

Has anyone got any ideas on this one, have tried several ways with the wires to sort this and this is the best situation I can get

Easiest thing to try with a starter motor is just give it a quick tap with a rubber mallet. Can free it up.

Have you taken it for a ride and gone through the gears? It could be it's just on when no gear is selected. Don't know if mine does this, if it does I haven't noticed!

For your neutral light problem it sounds like the clutch switch diode has failed (it was with the taillight loom on mine). The diode acts as a one way system in the electrical circuit. This enables the clutch switch to activate the same circuit as the neutral switch without current flowing back into the neutral light.

I never bothered fixing mine and just disconnected the clutch switch.
