Afternoon everyone.

As the total suggests I bought an arrow exhaust for my cbr125. All was fine for about a week or 2 then all of a sudden I could hear noise coming from the front of the exhaust. Took it to where I got it fitted and they tightened it up.

Got home same thing happened again. Went back and without looking said it needs near bearings mate. I think that's what he said.

Not liking the sound of this I took it to Dobles in Coulsdon an hour later got a phone call saying this is stupid their's no gasket. Checked with other dealers and they agree their should be a gasket fitted when you put the exhaust on.

Went back to the dealer and asked if their should of been a gasket put on new exhausts he said it depends....

I'm asking the wonderful world of BCF who is correct here.

I'd replace if I removed the exhaust, a new system would usually warrant one.

Was it the dealers who put the exhaust on? Tell them to stop half arsing their job and do it properly (put a gasket in it)

for the majority of bikes - absolutely yes there shud be a gasket.

the gasket forms the gas-tight seal between the engine block and the pipe.

metal to metal, pipe to block will not be a perfectly sealed surface on most bikes and gases can escape. combine that with the heating of the metals in that area expanding at different rates and hot exhaust gases under pressure will escape.

there may be a few specialised bikes / exhausts where gaskets are not used due to very highly enigineered tolerances but this is not the case on most mainstream bikes and especially with aftermarket pipes.

another exception is some bikes where the exhaust is held to the cylinder head with springs instead of being bolted on.

Thanks guys.

Yes it was supplied and fitted by the same dealer.

Thought I was right. They told me to come back after Christmas and they'll fit, said it'll be OK apart from the loss of power. But I didn't want to risk it

I'd stay away from them once you got it sorted though, who knows what else they are willing to decide you don't need?

Oh his brake discs are looking a bit rusty, I better put some oil on that, I know he only came in for his chain tension, cleaned and lubed but I'll help him with this too!

What's this pin thing for... I don't remember where that goes... I'm sure it can't be that important the brake pads seem to be on correctly..

Of course it should have had a new gasket put in. I expect they didn't have one to hand, so probably slopped some exhaust assembly paste on instead, and it's hardened and crumbled away.

Eh, fuck it, it's only some wee twat on a 125, he won't know any different.

Honda main dealer, by any chance?

The who supplied and fitted no.

The ones who fixed it were a Honda dealer
