So I decided to change the colour of my HJC. I used matt black plasti dip, as it can be removed easily without damaging the factory paint job.

1] The helmet before

I used like 75% of the can. I got mine off ebay 'liquid matt wrap' same as plasti dip but in a frost can. Two for 23 pounds, I will be using the second can on the bottom of my fork legs and levers.

Does it have a rubbery feel? If so that is fucking dangerous, if that lid touches down at speed you'll fuck your neck. Thumbs Up

Doesn't plastidip just peel straight off though? Always thought that was the idea behind using it so you can revert to original later.

Looks decent OP.

Nice!

Is there any aerosol sprays that are good for respraying lids? This has made me want to turn my boring silver Spada lid into something with a bit more pizzaz (?) .

p.s. that gif messed me up for a few minutes.

I'm no plastics expert but, isn't what Iain states correct? I know my Shark Lid stated that any warranty would be voided (or words to that affect) as paint or even stickers could cause an adverse chemical reaction leading to damage of the shell and thereby weaken it.

I'm almost pot-guessing here, but I was always under the impression the outer plastic shell is negligable in terms of its impact on safety, its the interior filler that absorbs and disapates the impact.

Hence the [possibly a myth Question ] warning of if you drop your helmet and it looks okay it can still be fucked as the internal contents can be cracked and in the next drop/accident crack apart much easier.

I understand what you're saying regarding the inner shock absorbing contents of the lid and I agree but, I personally wouldn't go so far as to say the condition of the exterior shell is negligible. Confused As I said, I'm no expert though.

I may be spouting shite Razz but i'm mainly going by when i cleaned out my helmets earlier this year, one or two had entirely removable padding/interior styrene, or whatever the white impact absorbing stuff is officially called Thinking

As far as I could see, the outer 'shell' of the helmet was essentially just something to hold it in place and shape - besides having a crack in it post-impact I couldn't see it having much impact in an accident, so in terms of painting/spraying/dipping it, I would be suprised if it did much safety wise.

I shall await being told otherwise and shown to be monumentally wrong however Wink

Pretty sure that's not a myth Matt.
The guy who did my CBT had half a motorcycle helmet (cut in half with a saw) and showed me the effects of compression on the polystyrene like stuff under the plastic.
Basically, the material absorbs the impact force but gets compacted in doing so. Making that area of the helmet less capable of absorbing additional impacts making it less effective as a barrier between you and "the force" Neutral

The plastic outer shell is obviously a "buffer" to the impact material stuff

Does the plastic dip affect the integrity of the helmet, who knows?
Would I consider doing it to any of my helmets ...

Funnily enough one of the only things i clearly remember from my CBT's also Laughing on one of the two CBT's we were told clearly - if you drop your helmet from waist height or above - replace it or you might as well not bother to wear a helmet.

I'm inclined to believe them as they were fairly experienced riders in all respects on the face of things.

Yea I remember that part too.
Mainly because my instructor initially kept going on and about about how loved his new Caberg or whatever (I was a noob, I dont know!)

Yet when he gave the " If I dropped it from this height, I'd never wear it" line.
I thought he was joking, untill he gave me the " YOU'RE DEAD TO ME" look Laughing

lesson learned
He then went onto say not to plastic dip you helmet as it will implode.
Also making a thread about it will kill kittens Shocked
