Hi Folks,
This is my first post. I'm planning a trip in mid August to travel to the Swiss Alps and also take in a few Italian mountain Roads, it's a trip with a twist since I fancy to try this on a CG125, which you might know tops out around 60 to 65mph on the flat. I'm gonna do a combination of cheap hotels and/or camping. The route is based on one I saw that was recommended by a motorcycle tours company, and looks like the ride of a lifetime. With somewhere between 5 and 7 days to complete it, it will be a challenge. I think we're talking 350 to maybe 400 mile days. If you like the sound of this then please get in touch, ideally you've got a CG, CBF, YBR or similar performance reliable vintage machine. My time is booked from work, so I'm going even if its a solo trip. Get in touch and we can discuss, or pass these details on to someone you think might like to do this trip.

Cheers

Paul

I do some serious mileage and fancy a trip like this on my 140cc monkey bike but 400 miles a day on a 125. That is seriously pushing it.
That is more along the lines of a challenge than a holiday, 200 miles is a reasonable amount i feel but whatever floats your boat and I wish you the best of luck.

I might have been a little way out on the mileage, but it's got to be perhaps 300 to 350 per day, which still equates to long days if the roads are a bit technical. I think I'll research a little more, go over there and just take it as it comes. Should be interesting, and I'll certainly come and post details of the experience here Smile

If you are doing that kind of mileage, particularly on a 125 and particularly when it's not going to be at motorway speeds, will not be enjoyable. I can pretty much guaran-fucking-tee it.

It sounds enjoyable. But it won't be.

If I don't fix a schedule, I can see how I go. Yesterday afternoon I we t up Wrynose and Hardknott pass in the lakes and down the west side on the way home. 190 miles was an easy afternoon, but the going was slow through the tight roads. Really enjoyed myself actually, and the bike seemed to shrug it off Smile

Best way to go, no plans, just see how it goes and get a bed for the night sorted early evening.

Also, I can see the Alps being irksome on a 125 4 stroke.
I reckon a 2 stroke would be quite fun, but with the 4 stroke I suspect the fun up-hill (mountain) bits will lose their sparkle and become a bit ponderous with the throttle to the stop. Personally I prefer ascending to descending when riding twisty stuff.

I'm used to the "throttle to the stop" riding, it's a regular thing on the CG, personally I enjoy giving the bike a challenge, and nursing it up gradients doesn't bother me, it must be the same for every rider of a vintage bike, and nobody would call them nuts for attempting this.
I've got a CBR 600 that I've done 815 miles in a day, but there's something I like about the little tough CG, I guess someone's gotta like them Wink

I don't think anyone is calling you nuts, it's perfectly doable.

It's just that doing that many miles for several days on a 4 stroke 125 will be dull as fuck.

I know that you're right with what you say. I guess I just see it as a challenge, otherwise I'd go on the CBR. Some people say a record is better than a CD Wink

I would also be questioning why someone on a 11hp 'vintage' bike with not so great brakes were choosing the Alps for riding, especially if they plan to use motorways to get there.

The Alps were some of the best roads I've ridden. With 60hp and decent brakes, it was pretty entertaining. Slowed to the pace of the cars I passed, less so I expect.

I don't see why doing it on a slow bike makes it more challenging?
Well, the only challenge seems to be that you'll have a fair bit more boredom to deal with and less fun on the 'fun' parts.

If it goes ahead..... It'll be an interesting one Wink

They told me when I went to Hamburg on my CBR6 to watch out for the Porsches on the autobahn doing 130mph+ but I didn't see hardly any passing me at 90mph..... Maybe it's the fuel prices Wink

ha ha ,i have to do it often enough on a 750 ,which is a pain in ass literally ,got it down to a fine art now,2 days leaving around midnight Coventry to Naples overnight Lyon arrive late evening Naples ,great in summer ,a scarey nightmare in snowy conditions ,

Admire anyone takling it on a 125 ,as i know the reality of those long lonley miles/km's soaking wet and cold .

Mindyou taking a couple of weeks at your leisure might be ok i guess, although as we all know the French and Italians have little patience if their being held up by a slower vehicle !!!!!!!!

They must have been having an economy drive that day Laughing . We done fair bit of 130mph cruising on the autobahns last summer and it just wasn't quick enough. Lost count of the amount of times there was a distant headlight in the mirror that was right up my arse in seconds. Think that some of the cars that passed us were closer to 200mph than 150.

Enjoy your trip, it's certainly not my cup of tea, I know I would be bored in minutes but if that's what floats your boat then go for it Wink

PS I Will be somewhere in the alps from around the fifth of August, if I see a CG on a hill I'll give you a shout

Back from the alps a couple of days ago, seen a lot of weird and wonderful bikes on the passes but don't recall seeing any CG125's.

Paul, what was the tour company that you seen this route on. I went on one with Freedom M/C Tours in the 80's and was wondering if they still existed. They were based in north Wales near Llandudno.
