Right today at work I got pulled in by a manager and they have asked me to cut my hair off. They say it is a health and saftey reason but none of my hair hangs down by machinery or anything so I can't see the problem.

The question is do I cut it off to keep them happy.

Offer to wear a hair net, or keep it tied up.

Hi

They have a responsibility to keep you safe, but your hair is not that long (shorter than mine).

Did they say anything about a specific length? Will they be happy if you tie it back?

All the best

Keith

Depends - what kind of hair style do you have?

Dreds - they might have a point, if you're around food.

very long - a hair new will keep it out of the way.

Basically, it's very difficult for an employer to 'make' you cut your hair, all they can do is ask....and blimey, where do you work, an oil rig or something??

When I was 16 I had hair down to my shoulders and started working as a porter in a 5* Hotel, on day one the manager pulled me in his office and told me to cut my hair

...there wasn't a day two...

l don,t see the problem as long as it is tied back, we have a machinist (works on laves/mills etc) who had dreadlocks down to his knees, he tied it back and it never cause a problem.

Seems like you should tell them to Middle Finger If you're hair isn't different from others who don't even tie it back then it shouldn't be an issue - challenge them on exactly what health and safety they are pursuing!

If it's written in your contract in any way they can pull you for it, but you could do them for harassment or victimisation. If not then tell them you want a payrise and a contract-change before you'll cut it.

As far as I am aware they have to provide you with 'protective clothing'. There is NO WAY they can insist you have your hair cut, unless it is in a written Employment Contract that you have signed! That is tantamount to sexual discrimination, and is in breach of your Human Rights!

I suggest you refuse - unfortunately I do not have the time now to review any relevant case law or statutes, but there will be precedence. Once you (or someone else) has discovered this then you can refuse - quote the relevant statute or case, and say that their request breaches the quoted statute/precedence.

Good luck
H

I don't think they can make you cut it, I have a friend who works for Royal Mail, with dreads and umpteen facial piercings and frequently wakes up old ladies with their post and the company cannot do anything about his appearance.. it's his choice how he looks and the same goes for your hair.. I think its something to do with Human rights. You have a union of some sort you can speak to?

They can only make you cut your hair etc if it genuinly is unsafe. if you work in a factory then they can make you tie it up etc. But if you just wont in IT then they cant force you to do a thing.

Is there some other issue underlying this problem? Have you had a run in with this manager before?

Whilst I would agree with other replies that you cannot be forced to cut your hair, once you've got into a conflict situation with your manager you are on a long and difficult road.

Negotiate or suck up to the next level up...

That bites Evil or Very Mad I have long hair, real long, to the point I can nearly sit on it! I'm male and have NEVER had any problems at any jobs, or even getting a job! I really sugest you tell them "NO FRICKIN' WAY" and as someone said - if it's a problem then they have to by law, provide protective gear and have no rights to make you cut ya' locks, I really agree with MarsBar on this - (read his post a bit further up) Employers really take the piss sometimes!

*sorry - rant over*

Laura, what job do you do? In some industry they could ask you to cut it if the look wasn't suitable. I used to work in 4 and 5 stars hotel and it was in the contract that some hair styles were not suitable, independently of the length especially if customer facing.

However it has to be in the contract and somehow i doubt that iy is the case as you said that some males have it longer than you.

Could it be that they are using that as an excuse to have a go at you and try to force you out?

To Dave ... that is really cool!! How do you normally wear it. down or up?
