Hi all,

Finally in Australia for good, and now looking at selling the Land Rover to get the missus a Golf and myself a cheap bike to get to work and have fun on days off. Would have preferred a shinny new CBR 600 in white but the finances are tight for the moment.

Was browsing around Gumtree and found this GPZ900 (https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/currumbin-waters/motorcycles/kawasaki-gpz900r-1989-future-classic-/1031930606). I know it's a Top Gun machine but there's something very Mad Max about it. Think I'd have to ditch my white textiles and get jeans and a black leather jacket to pull it off though.

Last bike was a SV650n, what are the GPZ's like to ride and look after? Loved the fact the SV seemed bullet proof.

Was also considering a cafe racer but in my price range they're all 100 and 200cc bikes here. Might have to think outside the box for my next one.

Antony.

Could try looking for a 'desert sled'? They're the cafe racers' desert-dwelling cousins.

Quote:
What constitutes a desert sled when we’re talking about dirt bikes? Some consider a desert sled to be any heavyweight motorcycle 500 cc’s and up, modified for desert riding with a skid plate, a big gas tank, along with assorted tools and spare parts tucked into every nook and cranny on the bike.

Mad Max was all big bored out IL4 air cooled ratty looking bikes, and if you have a turbo, supercharger or Nitrous then it's even more authentic. A small animal skull and a tiger skin seat would finish off that look well too! Laughing

Here in the UK GPZ900R's are now increasing in value but it's slightly older less sexy cousin turns out to be a classic bargain. Not only that, it looks even more mad max than the dowdy liquid cooled 900R.

I give you... the GPz 750 A model:

Coming from an SV650, It's going to scare you three times.

First when it comes on cam after an apparently bland bottom-end, slides your arse to the back of the seat and heads for the horizon.

Second when you look down at the speedo and realise that despite the apparent lack of engine noise, that induction howl has sucked in enough air to propell you to speeds you haven't seen before (it was the first production bike to do 150mph out of the box).

Third when you try to stop because it was designed in 1984 and has single pot, pivoting callipers.

Yeah but a Turbo is more 80s futurist than post apocalyptic TBH.

Australia, with a blanket 100kph speed limit, awful (inconsiderate) driving, and lots of police hiding with speed cameras.

Get something naked that feels comfortable at 100kph. If it runs ok on low octane fuel, bonus. Australian standard unleaded is about 92 RON, and about 10% cheaper than premium (95 RON).

It's a country where a cruiser makes sense.

When were you last there? I've seen 130kph speed limits, and the standard is 95RON, premium is 98, with the budget being 91.
they have E10, which is 10% ethanol, but we dont talk about that.

For the money, you can get so much more. My 98 zx6r was $2k, and I bought a 2006 ER6F for $2600 after selling it.

I was there in March, in Victoria. Didn't see any speed limit over 100k, 130 would have have been nice.

Lol, loving the pictures of the GPZ's. Fair point on the pants then - I'd be sweating my ass off so should have 10 pairs under the seat anyway.

As for the 100km speed limit, you're right for the most part. Northern Territory has it up to 130km and parts of Queensland 110km. The cops are also everywhere so it helps to know the roads and routes where they frequent. Still, it doesn't stop people here or elsewhere from spirited riding, although you do notice a lot of bikes for sale because "I lost my license".

For the price I'm looking at, seen a few 2000ish GSX6R's that I'm liking the thought of.

As for the white textiles, they look better than you think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vOTJjp5Ils&feature=youtu.be. Albeit now covered in bugs and chain lube that I can't seem to clean 100%.
