Wow, the stupidity and insensitivity runs strong with that one.

Just how daft do you have to be? There are hundreds of reasons for abortion and not many against it.

Maybe he couldn't think of a polite answer.

Q "Why do you think women want abortions?
A "Because they are dirty lazy skanks and junkies who didn't use contraception, couldn't be bothered to get a morning-after pill and don't know who the father is."

I don't think that answer would have gone down well.

I do hope you are joking and just trying to make a point.

Personally I have no problems with abortions, my stance is that if you don't like them then simply don't have one.

That said, there are reasonable and rational arguments that can be used in favour of a pro-life stance.

It always seems that the pro-lifers you tend to see on tv and such are really fucking dumb, with arguments basically centred around feels and "muh religion". There are good arguments to support your position out there, use them.

Half-joking. Remember, his belief is not that abortion should be banned, only that the current time limit should be shortened and that late-term abortions should only be legal where the mother's life is in danger. I'm not sure I agree with him but I don't think he's being particularly outrageous. He was asked a loaded question, the interviewer asked him why he thinks women have abortions, she didn't ask him why women want abortions after X number of weeks, implying that he is against all abortions.

Frankly that's just dumb, that's like me saying "well if YOU don't like murder then don't do it, but thems yer rules NOT mine, I'll commit as many murders as I like!"

It's just as dumb as saying: "If you don't like drinking, simply don't drink" which seems to be a perfectly acceptable standard, one that most people would agree with.

The difference between murders and abortions/drinking is that murder is affecting other people and abortions/drinking only affects the parties undergoing the process.

At which point you could quite reasonably ask the question: "why isn't an unborn fetus considered an 'affected other person'?" or "at what point does can a fetus be considered to have the same rights and protections as a normal human being?".
I don't have good answers for those questions, just those two questions open up a massive can of worms based on various social, medical and ethical factors that cannot be resolved into a nice right/wrong answer.

Personally I just don't really place too much value on human life, although I think that in plenty of cases, an abortion causes less suffering than a kid growing up with shit parents in a shit position in life etc etc. You just terminate all those possibilities at their start rather than allow them to mature into future suffering. I think that it is better to abort a kid, than to force parents who want an abortion to have that kid in their lives.

This is why I accept there are sound reasons for the pro-life argument even though I'm pro-life. Part of me thinks too though that in 2013, there's no excuse for "accidentally" getting pregnant. On both male and female sides of the equation, contraception is easily available. Granted, there is much more variety on the female end of things but as a guy, getting someone pregnant would be a life-ruining event so the incentive to sort it out is rather high.
