So today was my turn, not so fast but still crap.

Approaching just-gone-red traffic lights, I decided to slip into the gap in front of the stopped car, entering the broken white line box to do so, and applying braking force.

https://s29.postimg.org/tvs181wcn/shoreham.jpg

I suddenly find myself smacked on the road and sliding, that was hard! But I had gear on so no bother with me luckily. Knob snapped off clutch lever, nice graze to plastic by headlight, indicator cover came off, handlebars a bit out of line, more possibly to be found in daylight.

All due to aggregate on the road, falling off lorries coming from by Shoreham port or nearby. It would be nice to be able to send a bill to someone.

I imagine someone here will say 'due care and attention' but there's a wider issue as this is bloody dangerous and it's all over the roads down here. I'd quite like to give someone a hard time for this, any pointers anyone?

Bad news about the off. Maybe a little more rear brake when on sketchy surfaces.

Can't see anyone else to point the finger at. To be expected that grit, stones and screws live in those areas.
Main thing is you're ok.

Debris is one of my big fears this time of year, when I'm mostly riding in darkness. I'm more hesitant to use the cross-hatch areas, or any lightly travelled part of the road, in the winter.

Glad you and the bike are OK.

Cheers, yes those parts are where the bits gravitate, but this was a mini-beach which was suddenly washed up. I took some snaps with my phone - I might add one or two.

ABS. It works even when you're not concentrating.

Gravel is something I try look out for when aiming for the gap at the front of lights. Not just for braking, but it affects your ability to accelerate and lean too, should the lights go green at the opportune moment and you want to nip in front of the car.

There's quite a bit of it on Hackney Road at the moment, at one particular set of lights.

Good to hear it was minimal damage to you and bike Thumbs Up

We have a few areas near here that get littered with shite like that, the council sweeper trucks seem to miss a lot of it maybe because of the weight of the debris.

The interesting thing is if you go along unlit country roads in the dark, you land up riding over all manner of crap like that and don't even realise it. I've seen me whang along a road in the dark to get to a campsite that had enough mud and gravel on it to have my arsehole puckering when I went back along it the next morning.

Which goes to show the bike is once again more capable than the rider and will cope with most things given a smooth, relaxed riding style.

Also. Obs. You find two things in cross hatchings like that, gravel and punctures.

Point taken, but the gravel is not limited to that area here.

Update - upper left arm and hand a bit achey, cheese triangles dented, custard tarts OK Thinking

Local council. If for no other reason than the next person who bins it there might get luckier.

TSRGD 2002 says "vehicular traffic should not enter unless it is seen by the driver to be safe to do so".

Highway Code 130 adds "unless it is necessary".

I'm concerned about crap on the road if you read the thread. My mention of dented cheese triangles may offer a clue as to my self-righteous fury.

Ironic that your gist is that I should have looked properly.

If that huge amount of debris on the road caused you to loose control and crash,Then you need to get the bus .Riding a motorcycle is not for you.

This^^

Living at the end of a 3 mile single track with farms all along it I have to contend with cow shite from cattle being moved, mud deposited by tractors coming out of boggy fields, silage being dropped from over full trailers during the forage harvest season, barley grains being dropped by over full trailers or trailers in poor repair (this stuff is lethal!) as well as aggregate being washed down from farm tracks and deposited by overloaded trailers or overfull digger buckets. I've learned to trust my bike and not to overreact.

Hatchings at junctions, hard shoulders, roundabouts and lead in to islands are all places you can expect to find nasty sharp stuff and gravel.

Smooth riding is the key and controlled gradual use of brakes/throttle.

Yup it's another lesson learned, there wasn't any time to react - just flop as I wasn't going straight at the time.

^^This.

Living in a much more countryside sort of area now to what I am used to, I've had to adjust to just how much farm crap there is on the roads around here, mostly little B roads, but sometimes on major routes too. At this time of year I'm less inclined to use those B roads, but still sometimes do, with the caveat, TAKE IT REAL SLOW AND EASY, which will be running through my head like some kind of mantra whilst riding them.
But sometimes, even the best/most experienced riders can be caught out. Unlucky, glad you're ok.

I've contacted highways/council before after skidding around a corner on loads of loose crap dropped from the quarry lorries.
They sent a sweeper to get it up.
